Just wondering that for a 5 footer, would the following amount of bioload be an overkill? I am intending to give away some of the fishes already to anyone from this forums or if no one wants, will donate them back to the LFS I bought the fishes from. Highlighted in bold are the ones that I will be giving away as I am intending to have discus in my tank soon (probably 6-

    45 neon tetras (estimated)
    6 rummy nose
    6 black widows
    2 zebra danios
    2 spotted danios
    2 congos
    3 cherry barbs
    4 corydoras
    2 black phantoms
    2 red flames
    4 otos
    2 saes
    4 pygmy glass fish
    2 pygmy puffers
    2 threadfin rainbows
    2 neon rainbows
    15 yamatos (estimated)
    20 malayans (estimated)
    5 lampeyes

Would this be too much bioload for my 5 footer? Tank size is 5 x 2 x 2 feet. If this is too much I am intending to either sell or give away the neon tetras, black phantoms, red flames & the neon rainbows.

Only 15 Yamatos and 20 Malayans???

My last 5footer had 100 Yamatos and about 500 Malayans.

so its not an overload? Initial stage suffered from collectivitis.... However I am still giving away some of the fishes to make way for the discus.

It depends on your filtration, but it seems you have no problem there.
Your tank can take about 500 schooling fishes, no problem.

Actually, not a lot. That's what I had for my old 5ft setup 500 Rasboras and tons of shrimps.

That's a lot of fish poo you'll be collecting too... I guess for my case, its the fact that the danios keep chasing and chasing and chasing all the fishes and the black widows are super aggressive, as well as the congos. I've seen my congos and black widows eat up my malayan prawns.

    Sigh... the collectivitis syndrome.

That's why I stick to 1 type of main fish, 2 dwarf puffers, 20 Otos, and the rest are just shrimps.
And fish poo is not a problem when your tank is so heavily planted!

Uhm, I think 500 other fishes including the intended 6 to 8 discus is a big no-no.

I do not have any experience with discus but here are some quick food for thoughts regarding your current community:

15 yamatos (estimated), 20 malayans (estimated)
    - possible snacks for the discus?

    4 otos
    - may cling onto the discus because of the mucus that is produced, don't know if this is good or bad

    4 corydoras
    - warm water which is what the discus requires may not be suitable for your corydoras

Not exactly sure what the other fishes in your tank are but I remember reading somewhere to avoid fin nippers.

It would be wise to do your thorough research before getting the discus and that would include equipment and tank setup, not just about the compatibility.

    Yah collectivitis syndrome...

Just wondering, how can one trap or catch all the neon tetras? Thinking of selling all the neon tetras, thread fins, neon rainbows, black phantoms, red flames. Planning to have all rummy nose only as main shoaling fish.

Impossible in that tank of yours! You got to drain alot of the water out to catch all of them. That means your plants will have to move too.
Otherwise they will just hide among the plants as there's so much room!

    500?? tsk tsk tsk...
alive and living well does not equate to being happy
you can make a HUGE fish trap and just toss it in..use it multiple times you'll get all of them without even touching the plants

    Hey Quixotic.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah will be giving away or selling the rest of the fishes except for those which will be compatible with the discus. Gonna keep the puffers as I'm having a snail outbreak at the moment. Lots of ramshorn & MTS showing around now... until that's settled, will give away 1 of the puffers.

One way I can do to catch them. From what I noticed. I feed the fishes by hand and they will get the food from my hand... so I was thinking if once I feed them, I'll get my dad or brother to scoop them up once they reach the top of the tank.

It's like a feeding frenzy sometimes, so all of them will just gather at one spot.

    Feasible plan?

500 is way too much for me and out of the question, I was thinking of 60 rummy noses only.

Well, I didn't dump 500 Rasboras in a single shot. I started with 100, then added another 100. I had very tall background plants at the back and sometimes I don't see them. So added and added until it came to about 500.

Well Grey Fox, this is your tank. Do what you want with it. You came into this forum to get advice, not instructions.
In the end, you got to be happy with what you want to achieve. You are not setting this up to please others right?

Yup setting it up for myself for sure. Advise is what I seek, just thought those with larger tanks might give some insight.

Of course, if you have 500 rasboras in your tank likewise I have no right to comment on this. My apologies if my comment did upset you. Still I thank you for that bit of insight and advise that you shared.

    Appreciate it.

No offense taken at all. Don't worry. No need to apologize. I don't even know what this is all about!

And good luck with your tank. I think there can never be an end result because everyone's taste change all the time. Work will begin again when you just feel that something is not right about the tank....

Good to know that you did not take that personally bro. Anyways, hopefully I can catch the fishes without creating a hiroshima in my tank
