This morning I discovered that my male Apistogramma. sp. 'breitbinden' is swimming rather strangely...on closer look, I saw that his lips and mouth area is bruised!!!!!! What can I do to help?

Currently I have taken him out into quarantine and added OxyCure as I have no other forms of medication. How?

There is only pencilfish and white clouds in the tank, no other apistos.....could it due to a fight with Apistogramma pertensis few days ago? (just guessing)

"Shi fu"s kindly reply ASAP, as I've to go out to attend to something....

Any form of de-stress solution to begin with, stress guard etc. Lots of hidding place, the fish will probably need plenty of rest.

I do not know if it is due to fight, any bruises or tears can result quickly to fungus and bacterial attacks. We have been using some medications that seem to provide good results.

Just in case i do not sms you in the evening, pls sms me so that I can check on the brand while I'm at the shop.

Pls do very frequent water changes from now and watch its condition. Keep water very stable, you don't need the lights.

    Hope all is well.

    Regards

    Thio

Good that you isolated the fish. Give him adequate plant cover so as not to add additional stress.

Can you describle the bruise? Is it reddish sore or whitish patches? Any other parts of the body with injury? Any clamp fins?

Add salt in the mean time too. 1 table spoon for every 5 gallon. When you can, start a treatment with Melafix. This is good for repairing open wounds from fights.

    Keep us updated.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

No signs of fin clamp, only the lips are bruised in white, not red.....sadly this beautiful male has passed on this evening when i got back home....

I have bought a bottle of Melafix just in case for standby.....the female is still healthy and eating well.....will be getting another pair of brietbinden to form a trio......

But in any case, can anyone explain or suspect what is the cause of the injury? only the lips are swollen n bruised....

    Thanks!!

ps. A german bred shipment will be coming soon!! Watch out guys, the apisto bug will hit you once again!!

caca, that doesn't look like a fight injury, looking at the fins on the fish they are intact i would have expected to see torn fins if it was a fight.
it looks like it had some sort of bacterial disease as i can see red swellings further under it's chin. sorry about your loss.

    I agree with Mick.

Since the body is intact with no visible signs of injury, it's not likely to be battle wounds. Whitish mouth is also usually a sigh of bacterial infection.

I think you better consider looking out for the other fishes in your tank that looks seemingly healthy.

caca, the trouble with bacterial diseases is there are none until it attacks your fish, i'd do a WC then use a good brand of anti-bacterial treatment.
with luck it might only have been on that fish.

Just to hitch onto this thread regarding anti-bacterial treatment... I have also some sort of bacteria problem affecting the skin of a couple of tetras... Should treatment then be to the whole tank or remove them (also impossible in a planted tank) to treat, since the bacteria is probably staying dormant...
