usually see them in search for food, til now still didn't get the chance to see them doing mating approach. certainly an experience isn'it!!
I didn't get to see the whole ritual but after that all the females were full with eggs. Let me see if I can get this on videocam. The fact is I was surprized that shrimps have mating dance if that was it because I thought that only occurs with 'higher' animals. I also suspect that they were doing it in the open because there was no fish in the aquarium.

I've seen this behaviour with some of my Malayan shrimps too. They do a similar 'dance' despite the fact that share a tank with a 15-cm crayfish and about half a dozen guppies. I second the notion that it is a sort of mating dance.
Then again, these Malayans are about 7-8 months old and they are brave/experienced enough to do a lot of things in the open. Interesting critters they are...
Wouldn't the crayfish attack the malayans?Originally Posted by thptan

That's the interesting thing...
At first the crayfish was quite enthusiastic about eating the shrimp but Malayans are fast.
It got a few but about 80% of the Malayans have survived over time and now they are brave enough to pick on the algae that grows on the carapace of the crayfish!
My crayfish is getting old and nowadays I think it just prefers to wait for Hikari algae pellets instead.
I reckon the Malayans must be comfortable with the guppies and the crayfish because they do breed like crazy albeit the shrimplets don't survive (they need brackish conditions etc.)
Cheers
