hi bro, just read the notice tht the electricity on my unit/block will be off 9am to 5pm this thursday, due to some wiring works

i've never come across this before, so will like to hv ur advise on this. I'm worried abt the filter bb. All will die lah.. It's too expensive to invest in a generator just for this. Maybe i'll call PUB to see wut solutiuon. Any suggestions are welcome here.
There will be no more deaths after the holocaust. Of course, having 3 fishes in my 400L tank helps.

Perhaps bring it to a friend's place to run for the duration? E.g. a pail, your water conditioner, and the filter, and the fishes if need be.

Or leave it as it is since it is not a over a few days.

How "dirty" is your filter? If have have not washed it in a long time, maybe time to rinse off some excess bacteria before Thursday. Lesser bacteria may use lesser oxygen. So less likely to have bacteria die-off.

thks wzeir and juggler, good idea both. My filter is rather dirty.. perhaps time to rinse some bacteria. i'll give sp a call to see how long exactly is the duration. I wonder how long can the bb last in the filter without water flow... Shd i just open it up to let O2 in?

chances are that you'll be told 9am to 5pm.

remove the filter media trays, rinse them and place them in your tank. bigger surface area should help.

I've got a battery operated air pump. Put the filter material in the tank and run the pump.

If you don't want to do this, then make sure you run the water from the filter to waste when the electricity starts up again. This way you won't send the dead bacteria into the tank.

I don't think it would be that bad as I have experienced such power shut down a few times already and I did not do anything for that day. But it is good to take precaution.

Other suggestions that may make some sense:
    - Before and after the power shutdown, aerate the tank with air pump and turn on the lights.
    - During the power shutdown, turn off the CO2.

The only time when a tank of mine was totally wiped out was when there was an unscheduled 3 day power shutdown over a holiday period in office. I can't do anything to that newly setup small low-tech 1ft cube tank. The bacteria died and the water turned cloudy. However a bigger 3.5ft planted tank survived the darkness with only a discus casualty.

get a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Can be quite cheap nowadays - depending on the KVA rating.

thks for all the helpful tips.. I called the contractors and i must give them credit for good service. They were quite understanding and agreed to extend a special socket for my unit so tht there will be no interuption. So, i'll be a little late for work tomorrow as his men will come over at ard 8.30am or earlier. Excellent service there.. will update the forum..

Glad that it got sorted out. That's a pretty solid favour they're doing for you there too - an additional power socket to keep your power running.

indeed, the guys came at 8.10am, earlier than i expected and immediately run a long cable with socket from outside.. tested the socket and connect them to the fridge and aquatic equipments. when i got back frm work at 8pm, electricity was still running from the socket, so no interruption. Great service there..

Contractor usually charges for every extra point/line they provide to the awarding party, which in this case probably PUB or Town Council.

    Wow.
    That's great service..
I wouldn't have ever thought of calling them for a solution. But now I know what to do if I ever experience a situation like that again..

Once I tried using UPS. Thought that if it can power a 400W computer for 20 mins. It should be able to just power a 15W filter for at least a couple of hours. But somehow, it also shuts down after 20 mins during my test run.
End up using it for my computer since it does nothing significant to the fish tank.

can put your fishes in my tank but no guarantee.
It's not just "Step1: Add Water, Step2: Add Fish" If everything else don't work, add plastic plants and fish
