    Cheers,
The fry of maulbruter are especially strong (probably owing to the special care by their mother), they can achieve a 100% survival rate from a 1cm fry to 3cm young adult.

    Interesting information!

Would that mean that it's easier for beginners to try this species? Are they fussy breeders? Some Apistogramma species are notoriously difficult to induce breeding.

    Hmm, not really

The fry are strong and grow up quickly. However, it is quite difficult to entice the pair to breed. If we use ADA aquasoil, many pairs will spawn BUT all the eggs and fry will be eaten afterwards... I reckon that fine sand, soft and acidic water, are essential for breeding this species... i could only succeed with the use of fine white sand and peat moss. Another hobbyist in HK has succeeded with a bare tank and soft-acidic water. Here is an interesting and classic article for your reference:

Mainly in Hong Kong, even though many are imported to HK from Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Holland, Belgium, Brasil, Peru, and other countries.
