OK, so I'm drawn to apistos as well as the discus. I currently have about 7 discus in my 5 footer. To keep my thread short and sweet, if I were to get a pair of apistos, can they live in harmony, considering the size of my tank?

Also, will apistos pull out plants or create a shallow pit to lay eggs? 95% of my tank's base is covered with plants.

    Thanks all.

It should not be a problem to keep them in your tank, especially when there is plenty of hiding place.

Rams may "tidy" up their surrounding as they are open spawners. However, for most of the other Apistogramma species, they prefer a small cave. If you have space somewhere, tuck a little PVC pipe amongst the base of the drift wood and they will be happy.

However, don't expect to see them too often during breeding season.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Hey benny,

Thanks for the insight. My two large drift woods have pocketed areas or 'wooden caves', so that should be enough right?

I'll go look for a pair of starter apistos to start with and hopefully watch them grow into the tank.

Perhaps a trip to Biotope at the end of the week might be a good idea. Even if it's just to look see. Might help you plan for the future.

    Cheers,
The future of more tanks! It is very infectious...

You can also go for the German blue Rams which Biotope is bringing in...

I keep 1 discus in my 2.5ft tank with a few Apistogramma & some small fishes, so far they are ok. As what i observed, Apistogramma dont do much harm to the plants. All they need is "cave" like hiding places

both fishes come from the same kind biotope.
    so they are certainly compatible.
only issue i reckon would be looking for a shy apisto in a 5 footer!
then again, that's the fun of it.
