Apistogramma mendezi

A pair of wildcaught mendezi, this one is very colorful with
orange belly and cheek. The fins are red during display

hmm... my impression of Apistogramma mendezi has always been dull and lacking in color. But this one here certainly has nice colors on the caudal fins!

Good body proportions too!

Very good observations!! Well, the tank is not a new setup; you see the bubbles simply because i just added some
new aquasoil, on top of the old ones, before i took the photos ^.^

Blueblue, do you have trouble leaving the pair inside to spawn? It had been quite a number of times when the female consume the eggs after spawning.

I read in uwe romer's book mentioning that mendezi in captivity will consume their offspring.

The only success from their spawn is when i take the eggs out to hatch myself.

I'm wondering if it' happens only to wild mendezi only.
A good 5-6 spawns already yet they can't understand? Yr advise is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben, i think it is either the environment or the personality of the parent fish which brings the problem. I have bred mendezi several times and the female fish has done very good jobs in raising the fry... anyhow, you may wish to think about providing more hiding places and cover some sides of the tank by black paper. You will succeed next time

I understand where you're coming from, the back is covered in black background, the left and right side are covered with tank glass algae making it impossible for viewing. The only expose is a 20 cm x 20 cm for viewing and shooting.

You may consider changing the female fish then.
Replacing another one can help to fix the personality problem

Actually i thought i've got another female, but after the second introduction of the female, it turns out to be a male!

Well it's not too bad or too difficult to artificially raise it.
