Spotted a baby silver arowana in JB last night. Cost RM35, about 4 - 5 cm long, active swimming around but a bit shy when I got too close to the tank.
It has a little black spot behing the grills, like that of the lohan.

I have a 2ft tank that I can free up. Have a few questions and appreciate comments & advise on them :

What are the condition for having this fish
Can I feed them with frozen blood worms, as with my discus.
How to spot if this baby fish is problematic / not in good shape.
Any other things that I should watch out for ?

    cheers

    Hi ScubaSnoopy!

Pls prepare a larger tank 4 the aro coz it gonna grow. Ideal tank wud be a 4ft-6ft lah. 2ft can tahan 4 a few months only.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

    SS,

Yes, the size of the tank is quite important if you're gonna keep large fishes like aros. If not later you'll looking for ppl to adopt it.... please consider first
    Cheers!!

if yah planning to get an aros, go for the red ones.

    Reasons being
    1: more beautiful
2: worth a lot more when they grow up oh well, just a nice-to-have

Speaking from experience, the normal aros are simply not worth the time i guess. (Dad keeps ard 10 aros mainly red)

Oh, not forgetting your 2ft isnt gonna last long..

    charles i disagree.

because each fish is special in its own ways

Perhaps if 30years ago the hobby decided that silver aros are the most beautiful and they have the highest values affixed, we may see red arowanas selling at $15 each in plastic bags.

--SIlvers are tough. They do very well in the condition of our tap water.

--They can be fed with bloodworm. But you will need to change to larger food to suit their mouthing when they grow. And it grows tremendously fast. You can first train them to take krill. I recommend Tetra Krill-E. Later on, you can train them to take market prawn (those WE eat). THis is the most economical in long run if thats a concern. If you dont mind using feeders, get some fish or frogs for it to eat once in a while.

--They are good jumpers. Always bear that in mind. Many many ppl lost their aros due to carelessness...forgot to cover up.

--How to spot if this baby fish is problematic / not in good shape.

--A healthy baby fish is alert and bright eyed. It should swim actively and not sulking at the bottom all the time. Its fins should be open broad when it swims and turns.
If the fish is kept in shop long enough, it will respond to you.

--The most commonly damaged area is the barbels (the "feelers&quot
ALthough they will grow back, but it is best to get a baby with undamaged barbels. THey should be striaight, and point slightly upwards not downwards ( downwards is most of the time indication of damage at the root)

--SIlvers are very easy to keep. Just keep water quality reasonably good they will thrive.

--But the main concern is space.
An adult can get to over 2.5ft easily ..in abt 3-4 years time.
you need a 4x2ft wide tank for the immediate couple of years. ANd in long run, a 2.5ft wide is more desirable, length at least 5ft.
your 2ft tank will only last at most 4 months.

--They are among the most peaceful of aros. They can be readily placed in a community setting with big, moderately aggressive fish, eg siamese tiger, oscars

you can have nice one readily in singapore.
C328 always has them. Price of a 3" baby is abt 16$ ....5" abt 22$ the last time i saw
