Anyone has experience bring fishes out of Singapore. The reason I asking was I had a friend from overseas who came to Singapore for a short visit. He went to bought some fishes from our fish farm & when he wanted to bring the fishes home at the airport. He was not allowed to carry it back. Is there a procedure of bring fishes overeseas from Singapore?

there is no restriction of taking them out. it is more a concern of taking them into his home country. certain country is a simple no-no for livestocks of any sort.

You can take fish into Singapore within the prescribed rules, for personal enjoyment. Bascially up to 50 fishes, within 3 litres of water.

Your friend was stopped at the Singapore customs? I mean they don't even check you when you leave other than for firearms and such. Also what fish was he trying to carry?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Two factors.

    1. Airlines. Some airlines have a no livestock policy in the passenger cabin (e.g. Singapore airlines). If the customs sees it, they are obligated to report to airline. Usually, they will tell you no.

    2. Country. Some countries prohibits livestock from entering their country (e.g. US, UK, Hong Kong and Thailand). If the customs sees it, they will reference it with your boarding pass and see if it's a problem.

Even for hand carried livestocks, be discrete and pack it properly. Usually, 2 fish in 2 plastic bag will never be allowed. fishes that are double bagged, and packed in boxes stands a higher chance. Small fishes can be placed in mineral water bottles.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

that's why I always pack them in the check-in luggage.

also is he stopped at the gate? that's the only place in Changi where the hand carry is checked.

That would mean a water tight container. Also when they throw luggage around, the fish might be blur

yes, mineral water bottle enclosed in plastic bag just in case. half-filled and lying down along the bag so unles your bag gets stood on the side, the fishes will always have the hemispherical bottom over the length of the bottle.

    Hi Guys,
Have spoken to the person, it was because Singapore Airlines have a no live stock policy onboard planes. He is also confused as to why because some of his friends have done it before. He was hand carrying it and was stopped at the 'GATE'.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

his discus must have been so big as to be un-ignorable most of us bring small things that can be missed by the scanner. after all they are not really looking for bags of water with tiny swimming skeletons.

The discus were about 10cm only. But the plastic packing were quite big, I think the supplier was quite concern about the flight home and gave him the Export packing.

Rule no 1 : Die Die must check in!

At least Changi airport would scan before you walk into the check in counter, but NOTHING at the HK airport.....so boys and girls enjoy your shopping in Tong Choi!

I was also thinking of packing them in the luggage instead of hand carrying.. but my main concern was the temperature inside the luggage compartment. A couple times when I got my luggage back, it was very cold inside...almost frozen. I guess it depends on the type of plane and whether it has a heated luggage compartment.

never have such a problem. possibly my trips are short 2-4 hours ones. anyway for long 10-12 hour flights, just wrap it up in your sweater?

hi all. I'm based in london uk where the quality of livestock at my LFS can be quite abysmal. hence as I am planning a trip to Singapore this June, I have decided to import some fish home. For that I am having to make the following preparations:

    1. apply for an individual live fish import licence here in the UK. the application process is free.

    2. i will be flying singapore airlines. as a general rule, they only allow fish to be checked-in. additionally, the weight of the fish cargo does not go towards the standard 20kg baggage allowance, but will be counted as excess baggage for which a surcharge is applicable. i may possibly be flying on business class and hence plan to ask whether biz class passengers may be allowed to bring them abroad as hand carry luggage. i also plan to ask what the cargo hold temperature is. Anybody knows this from experience?

    3. In singapore, I need to get the fish checked by a vet. Some fish farms apparently are under a blanket AVA scheme which gives them the authority to certify fish export consignments as being free from disease. such fish farms are rountinely visited upon by AVA officials and after a period of a good conduct are given such a privilege. I don't know, but am hoping that the Pasir ris farms that I plan to buy my fish from are able to issue such a fish health cert.

    3. Upon landing at Heathrow London, I have to make way to BIP (border inspection patrol) where the fish will be checked. This will cost about 20 pounds or about 60 singapore dollars.

    4. from heathrow airport I will have to take the heathrow express to central london. about 15 mins.

As the fish would have been in the bag for abt 13 hrs (flight time) and another 4 hrs (pre-check-in time spent in bag), 2 hrs (at BIP), abt 19 hrs altogether, time wld clearly be of the essence and i shld want to pray very very hard that they survive the journey.

    whew.
