Benetay is correct. These are known in the market as 'steel blue' or 'blaukopf' in German

Hybrid form of Apistogramma, possibly from Apistogramma caetei and Apistogramma sp. 'Wangenflecken', as indicated by Datz.

At S$1 to S$4 a piece, many clueless hobbyist think they got a great bargain when they spot one. Amongst the serious hobbyists, this fish does not command respect. Key identifciation traits is the unique blue "darth maul" markings on the head and the metallic blue coloration.

    Cheers,

    yikes!
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    why not consider a non-hybrid?

I actually like it, don't see anything wrong in keeping it. They like living in a group and they look really nice together.

    A. sp. "Steel Blue"

    Dear All,

I read Romer's Cichlid Altas I and there are a few pages on
    A. sp. "Steel Blue"... Romer just said that the origin of this
fish was unknown and it was first imported from Singapore...

This fish can be found in Hong Kong with a very very very
low price. Again, it seems to me that ALL the fish available
in the retail market are male.

Here, I just want to reconfirm whether this fish is totally a
man-made hybrid instead of a natural species...

Any ideas on its true identity will be most welcome.

    Thanks
I keep plecos and dwarf cichlids

It looks really nice with the photos. I guess just that the hardcore doesn't like any hybrids.

    Re: Apistogramma HYBRID 'Steel Blue'

If you are interested in learning more about this species try http://www.dwarfcichlid.com/Apistogr...Steel_blue.php

Females are starting to be more widely available but most fish found are still male.

Although I personally do not support the creation of hybrid fish I certainly agree that this species can be stunningly beautiful.
