Erm whats backwash?

Eheim doesn't have backwash feature in their line of filters from what I know. Sand filters for commercial water treatment or big tanks with big budgets might have that though.

Shouldn't the filter come with instructions? Ehiem 2213 has "backwash" feature, it's the Classic range. There must be a switch or something that will reverse the impeller rotation direction.
Water pump do not work that way. It is a centrifugal pump. No mater what direction the impeller spins it will not drive the water backwards.Originally Posted by |squee|
I think to do backwash, you just flush with water by introducing water into the outlet of the filter. Does the manual not cover this?

Instructions can be found here - Rex Grigg.com.

P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.
I have read an ingenious was of backwashing the Eheim classic filter. For water change, this guy just unplug the inlet tube and let the aquarium water siphon from the outlet tube through the filter to the inlet tube to the pail. Quite a smart idea.

This is a very good way to backflush the filter...Originally Posted by brianclaw
But now with the filter media basket provided, is it still necessary? I used to just take the whole basket out and do a dip and shake in a pail of old tank water... Should have the same effect right?

Filters for swimming pool have this backwash function, it is use to wash the filter without doing it manually. For those sand filters, it is connected to a air compressor which pump air into the filter to shake up the sand. All the dirty particles is then pump out through the drain pipe, while the valve on the pipe that is connected to pool is shut off.Erm whats backwash?
This the first time I heard of a backwash function in a canister filter for a aquarium but I have thought of the idea though.
But does this backwash feature really useful or effective? It may be easier to the filter owner to clean the filter without taking it apart but in my own opinion, the backwash might do some harm to the tank by releasing some harmful stuff that was filtered out in the 1st place, only to be dislodged by the backwash and not removed completely and unknown to the filter owner until he/she switches it on. Just my own opinion.![]()
