I do it about once a year, or until plants are suffering from lack of light.

The first of my batch of AEC PLL 36W blew in about 2.5 years. The rest have not. Each have different lifespan even of the same brand. I will use them as long as they last. I have switched over to Osram.

When I install a new tube, I usually mark the month/year that I started using to keep track of the lifespan.

The reason for changing PL lights every 6 months for me is because apparently the bulbs dim after prolonged period of usage. I've never bothered to actually see if it's true though, I just change since it makes me feel better.

Unless the plants are dying from lack of lights, I would not bother. Most fluorescent lights loose the initial brightness within the first 1 or 2 months. From then on, the loss in brightness is quite gradual. Most good fluorescent lights retain the brightness quite well for most part the service life.

    ok understand then.
noticed that my HC and Blyxa are still pearling, so i guess it was still ok.
But then i do notice that my HC growing tall instead of crawling sideway (they do but very very slowly), was worrying whether was it because it's due to the light
