Alternatively, try searching for OEM taps that might fit the 501 hose diameter.
Would using a tap to restrict the water flow damage the pump motor since the pump is still working at full power?

After a long delay, finally got the right rocks and HC.
Here's day 1 (minus the overhang filter and DIY CO2) :

Think of adding some hair grass to smoothen the looks.

Need some suggestion of the fishes. Other than Rasbora maculata, another other tiny species available ?

Can keep scarlet badis. They are nice and small but do not keep more than one in a tank. I think they will be chasing each other (saw them chasing in my tank but got enough cover).

After a few days the HC became stunt and some leaves started melting.

Could be the gravel layer in the tank too thick that the roots not able to reach the soil below ?

Decided to remove half of the gravel and replant the HC, this time make sure they were inserted into the soil layer.

Since I am at it might as wel re-arrange the rocks....

Hope this time they can survive and prosper...

Eheim Pro and Pro II series both have variable flowrate that can be adjusted via the outlet, i would suppose this method would applicable for all types of external canister filters.

For the fert scheme I plan to try EI method on it.

Due to its small size (about 1.8 - 2L) should I do the water change more often ? (daily 30% ?)

About the dosage should I just scale down everything to the tank volume ?

Can I use the JBL liquid fert as the trace ? It contain Fe and the other micro.

I plan not to add MgSO4 and K2SO4, will only add KH2PO4 and KNO3. I think if I change 30% water daily it should have enough Mg, Ca and SO4 in it from the tap water ?
    (dechorinate of course)

The lighting level is over 5 wpg (a 7W PL). DIY CO2 to an airstone. Monitor PH and KH : CO2 level around 20ppm.

Any thing else I should watch out ?

BTW no fish added yet. Will wait out for another week to decide.

And for the filter I decided to continue use the original overhang filter as it had a flow rate control, and with the water level high enough the flow is quite smooth and slow and not agitate the surface that much.

Your scape has the potential of representing "the big in the small". Hope your HC grows out well!

The HC is a total failure : (
May be water temperature too high.

    Now try HG.

May be between 28 to 30C.

The tank is so small that I can't fit a fan on it.

i think your HC failed, could also be because you didn't inject co2 into your tank i suppose

Could be too. As I find the tank size is too small (only 2 liter water volume) to manage CO2 injection. Even a slow DIY CO2 (1 bubble every second) can be too much. I am trying Seachem Excel as the carbon source now. Hair Grass seem to response with some new leaf.

One method to cool a small tank like that is to place it a dark area of your house. I am not sure how this suggestion might help you or not, a friend of mine once used a standing fan to cool both his nano tanks and overcolocked CPU (casing cover removed) at the same time, worked very effectively.

Ive built a pretty small fan before... I bought the fan(40mm) and adapter from Sim Lim Tower and the clips from NA.
You can take a look at it here.

Heres the latest updates. Looks like HG got a hang-on to my 2 Liter Nano regime : )

Heres the latest shots after cleaning up the rocks (took it out and soaked in hydrogen peroxide solution overnight to clean all the algae on it). Replaced the rocks and some HG trimming.... fill the watre to the top and camera action...

There is no filter, no fan, don't bother about water temperature.

Fertilization regime is a scale-down E.I. scheme, with Seachem Excel as carbon source (3 drops a day), plus JBL trace fert (1 drop every other day) and NPK mix (KNO3 and KH2PO4, 2 drops a day). Follow by 50% water change weekly.

    Hello,
wonderful tank setup, looks very nice for such a small tank. (2litres sounds tiny..whats the length?)
I am starting on a tiny 1ft tank, and want to work with crypts, but I think some hairgrass would combi well too (hopefully, what do you think)
anyway, wanted to ask if they are growing excellent for you, or slow/hanging on, etc. because the last time I tried a nano with no CO2, my HG never grew, could be my lighting prob also.
do you experience any algae atacks on the HG?
    thanks

    The tank size is 18cm x 13.5cm x 14 cm (7 inches length).
The HG started growing after 2 weeks from planting (after I gave up the HC), not fast, but definitely growing. Just did a first trimming after 1.5 month.
At this tank size I found that it was hard to manage the CO2 by injection, easily exceed the safety level (>40ppm!), and the original hang-on filter box cause too much surface movement and generated heat to the water.
At the end I found the best is to go without filter and no CO2 - but adding Seachem Excel as the carbon supply. Excel also help suppress the algae.
The growth start noticeble when I up the Excel dosage to 3x recommended level. Any more will start killing the cherry shrimps ! Also the adding of KNO3 and KH2PO4 is a must or it will not grow. Plus the JBL liquid fert (for micro trace)
to complete the menu. The weekly 50% water change is to reset the water preventing excessive build up, as I never test the water now.

To prevent algae attack on HG you need to first trim it to almost 1/3 height when first planted so that it can shed the emersed leaf (those will decay) and start grow the fresh submersed leaf faster.
BTW I added a layer of soil (Aquatic compost) under the lapis sand.

In the begining there were brown algae at the glass surface. For this tiny size I employed a ramhorn snail to do the cleaning job. It was so satisifed with the post it laid 2 large batches of eggs in the tank ! which I promptly removed. Then it got fed-up and left the tank one night, found its "carcass" on the floor 1 meter away from the tank. I throw it into a tub it came back alive again.
Sorry to side track....back to the topic of nano tank, I think 1 ft is not so bad to manage. You can DIY CO2 into it with an normal air tube to near the inlet of a mini powerhead.

Go to Kinokuniya and look for the Amano book volume 2, plenty of 1 ft tank example to copy the scaping idea.....

Though with limited amount of space, the rock and hairgrass blend well with each other.
    good job there, nice tank!
