ok, i got a couple of this fellas yesterday. They are now under QT. This morning i just realise that there's some strange growth on one of them. I suspect that it could be ulcer due to transportation.
Is there anyway i can treat him? Can i use melafix? Pls help

    Hi Betta,
Yes you can use Melafix first. Don't think it's ulcer though...I've heard the males are aggressive towards each other and that patch looks more like 'column'..maybe you can observe for 1 or 2 days first.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

Ulcers do not develop from transportation stress. At least not so quickly.

Not a very clear picture. May not be columnaris. From the look of it, it may be septicemia.

Can you post a better picture or give a better description? Septicemia is beneath the scales of the fish. Ulcerous growth will puncture the skin and form lumps that are visibly uneven.

Do a salt dip and isolate the fish first. Melafix will do no harm and may prevent further secondary infection.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    What is septicemia?
I added Melafix and Primafix together. A few drops of each. A couple of hours later it died. The body of the fish became very pale and the unknown patch seem to have got bigger Didnt know it was so fatal.....

If the unknown patch is red even when the rest of the body is pale, then it's definitely septicemia, and not columnaris.

the patch seem to have spread thorughout the side of the body, somehow taking away its color. i wouldnt say it was still red.....it was lighter red and covered almost 50% of its body.

Just now while feeding them, saw another poor bugger hanging at the surface of the water grasping for air. Notice some protruding scales at the top of the head. Any idea what is wrong with him.

My harlequin shared a slightly similar symptons as well. It started as a small "abrasion". However, after a while, that are enlarge and a raised bump has formed there as well. However, the wound is not reddish like a red sore. I left it inside the tank hoping it will recover by itself as it is still behaving normally. Definitely not dropsy or fungus. Any idea what is it?

    Cheers!

it could be velvet scale ,, where thoes scales soften and stick out a bit and look like some sort of soft fluff
or maybe other fish have been nipping at him is he hanging around the at one of the corners or something close'' and the food he is eatin could have mold or bactiera that might cause this condition and PH could have some kind of effect on the fish he is either in a bad enviorment for some reason or he was sick when u first got him and he has just gotten sick enough for you to notice
their is alot of things the fish might need ..it is very hard to duplicate a perfect enviorment like in the wild just do not be to aggressive in treating him
he could go into shock and you would loose him for good. dont know if any of that helped just trying think of something that might help in fishes fast recovery later tater

    gills for life

maybe it has a problem with how much oxygen it can absorb through its gills
alot of times if it is a gill problem they will appear to be breathing at the top of the water their not breathing their is just more oxygen at the surface and not able to absorb O2 then he would appear to be gasping for air? let me know if any of this helped in any way right????
