I tried this, without success before. I think you cannot dismantle the ball.

I pulled some apart to make a wonderfully dense carpet with some growing on rocks as well, although not seen in the picture.

The solid green colour & texture almost looks unreal. When used as a carpet it does need to be held down or wedged, as they do not sink, rather rest. This plant/algae does collect debris and more water flow seems better.

    Hi guys,
    thanks for the comments...

well, if aquaobsession cant grow the plants when tied on rocks...how come it works for rupert when not tied down?...could it be due to the tying down of the algae?

    thanks

    yours sincerely,
    Storm

Everyone have various forms of luck with different plants, sometimes they grow, sometimes they perish…. here is a link to a picture by Oliver Knott of this algae tied down on wood:

Alas, my need to advertise rears it's ugly head...

This tank is one sale at biotope. Please buy, i need to finance my tertiary education without mooching off my parents

Oh if you're wondering how to make hair algae stick to something, just leave a algae ball in a FILTERLESS tank with whatever you want it to attach to. Give it about a week and you SHOULD see the beginnings of algae on your rock/stick

Guys, I just got some tufts of algae from Biotope (FOC) and coincidentally found this thread. What makes this algae grow well? What conditions are needed? I love the thick lushness of it and I think it looks better than Riccia. I want to make a carpet of it in my cherry shrimp tank just like Rupert. Come come, tell me how to grow these green hair algae in my tank!!!
