I am shifting this to AquaTalk for more response on your first query...

As for advantages and disadvantages, I think if you read through the current threads on snails, you would be able to get a rough idea... But mostly, IMO, snails in tanks is a personal acquired taste... Eg. I like zebras, red ramshorns and nerites but will frown upon apples, normal ramshorns and pouch/pond snails...

Maintain a good calcium level if you want the snails to be healthy.

Oh, and please do not use SMS lingo and short forms. We do not have a maximum (number of) character limitations, so please spell each word fully. For accepted (and common) abbreviations, read this thread. Finally, have a good time, finally posting in AQ since 2004. Yeah...

Ramshorn snails do wonders for my hairgrass - without which they would have been suffocated by algae - and keep the aquarium glass clear of all algae - so effective that I no longer need to use the magnetic clip ons. Ramshorns prefer algae to plants so it's a matter of individual preference - between a "nature" person who could appreciate seeing snails in the tank or a "nurture" person who just wants crisp amano-looking tanks

My personal favourite is Malayan Trumpet Snail... stay buried in the gravel till after dark, then they come out en mass to sweep across the tank walls in a right to left direction. But be warn that unless you like snails, this will be a nightmare for you.

I like ramshorns too... especially the cherry ramshorn. Hate pouch/pond snails.

Nerites and Zerbras are great too, but Apples will usually eat plants.

I have one particular pouch snail which is has a very beautiful shell... It has rectangular shape patches which are golden in colour... Very pretty... Can't take a picture of it since it is in my office tank... *my office bans camera*

So sometimes, pouch snails are pretty cute too...

I just can't stand the pouch snails when they are babies and floating upside down on the water surface... Eww...
