This huge snail (0.5cm... at least it is huge to me) suddenly appeared out of nowhere in my year-old snail-less tank. Is this a friend or a foe? Can anyone please help to ID it? Thanks a lot! Sorry for the blurry photos.. The limitations of a camera phone..

Thanks alot of the rapid reply! Will it multiply fast? Does it chew on plants? Do you recommend I remove it or keep it?

yes, they multiple like rabbits, best way is to introduce snail eaters, loaches, pufferfish & etc. They do alot of damage to new leaf especially

That is not a ramshorn. That is a tadpole/pouch/pond snail. Relatively harmless, like the ramshorm, they will eat uneaten food and dead leaves. I do not have problems with them with new leaves, but one cannot be too careful, though... But they will also breed like rabbits... or worse! Haha...

Just physically remove as many as you can...

just remove them as and when u see them...aft that just chant ur prayers.

they can be introduced into ur tank when u buy new plants which have snail eggs on it..but u can't see those eggs..

I have this type of snail in my tank for many years. They are harmless and I believe they help eat algae and so far have not caused injury or damage to the plants (crypts).

They do not breed so profusely now because I try to keep the water clean and algae infestation down to a minimum. At one time when I neglected my tank, there was more algae and also more snails. But snails really don't bother me at all. I quite like having them instead.
