i bought some cardinal tetras from c328 this evening. shocked to find torn fins and WHITE SPOTS on majority of the fishes after they had been acclimatised and added to my main tank.
i had a good look at the shop - all looked healthy and brightly colored. however, i was interupted many times while examining the fishes because the shop was so crowded. another mistake added to my newly setup planted tank. sigh...
anyway, did some research on the remedy and found the thread that advised adding 15ml of salt per gallon recommendation. i've done that and presently keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
in short, avoid the cardinals at c328 for the time being and please examine the fishes carefully at the shop and prior to adding them to your main tank. don't be a fool like me. i'm new to this hobby but that's not an excuse. stupidity is stupidity!
btw, why are most of the aquarium shop people so surly?! business is bursting at the seams and money pouring in by the bucket loads but still the sour face. wonder what would make them [aquarium shop owners and workers] happy. sigh again...

you're right about the cheapo part compared to the arrowanas and lhs in c328 - i bought mine for $1 each. so many lhs that they are packed in plastic bags and stringed up for display. well...

5X? like 5 tablespoon per gallon? wouldn't that kill all my plants? i've got a planted tank. crap!!! should have bought my cardinals from macpherson but chose not to because it's not too accessable for me.

Don't worry, roy. I have tried it on my planted tank and it really got rid of ich without damaging any plants. However if u keep catfish, take them out first or else they might be killed by the salt.

cut down to 3ml per gallon = 1 tbsp per 5 gallon
hmm... read in many threads that the recommended dosage is 1 tablespoon per gallon and that's what i applied. if my dosage is 5X too high then it's too late now. have been monitoring the dosage on both fishes and plants, and none observed thus far. i suppose only time will tell.
thanks for informing me because i was thinking of increasing the salt dosage gradually up to maybe 3 tablespoon per gallon. i'll just sit-tight for the moment.

the fishes would have any diseases when bought from shops.
initally, i already had like 10 neon tetras in my tank.
Then i bought 18 more from c328. First few weeks, all tetras
look ok and eating fine. Then , they start to die off one by
one. In the end, only 4 survived.
I'm no fish expert but I think they should not let ppl
self-service with the same nets that have been dipped
into countless tanks before.
"I have treated fish for Ich using the salt/heat method, bringing salt concentrations up to ~1 tblsp/5 gal concentration. The trick when doing this with corys in the tank is to go slowly. Predissolve the salt in tankwater, and add it back into the tank a little at a time over several hours. When I've done this, I've never seen any signs that the fish in question were in any stress whatsoever. Just dumping in the salt, OTOH, can lead to them going belly-up pretty quickly. As with other parameters (pH, hardness, etc.) the real stress is not generally caused by the actual values in question, but by the speed of the change. Fish should be acclimated to higher salt levels the same way they're acclimated to differences in pH or hardness."

ime catfish, esp corydoras being incompatible with salt treatments is urban legend
you just have to be careful to mix the salt solution carefully

planted tanks have a tolerance for salt, but not in huge amounts
feel free to experiment
so long as your fish don't show distress and your plants are alright, that will be good
but i recommend 1 tbsp per 5 gal (~20l) as a lower benchmark
any lower than this and it might not work at all

1. Fish stress due to long journey
2. Water parameters to different between it's origin and your tank
3. Temperature difference too great (not usually)
4. Stressed by other fish in your tank
and other reasons which I can't think off right now. Normally we should acclamatize the newly bought fish so that they are not shocked by the new environment.
dea, sorry i made a boo-boo again. in my first thread, i should have said 15ml or 1 tablespoon per 5 gallon but instead i made the mistake of saying 15ml per gallon. of course, 5X.
anyway, 1 part per 5 gallon is what i applied. apologise for any confusion caused.

its always a safe practice to quarantine.
Too much salt may not kill the plants. But it will stun them. If I am not wrong, it hinders the normal nutrients uptake.----------------

my plants were growing for 3 wks while i treated for chilodonella at 3x the normal dose
if your plants are healthy before you add the salt, there shouldn't be any noticeable effect
