I think the instant change to yellow means the KH is one or less? Is your test kit the type where the KH is estimated by the number of drops required to turn the liquid from blue to yellow?
I have not changed the water in my 4ft tank for about a month after I returned home from an oversea trip.
This morning when I did a KH test, I receive no reading. Meaning the water in the container did not change from blue to yellow. Instead at the first drop it already turns yellow.
Does this mean that the KH is very high in my tank right now?
Would I need to do a massive water change? if so how often?
Tank features : ADA amazonia soil, CO2 tank
Sorry I dont know what other information to provide, please help. Thanks

It should be 1 or less.
Anyway, the livestock and plants in the tank are alright aren't they? A massive water change will do more harm than good imho. 50% should be enough if you really want to do a water change.
How's your CO2 during the one month? One likelihood could be low CO2 level hence some plants will turn to extract the carbon from the bicarbonate hence the KH will drop. I.e. Your first drop of KH testkit already turn yellow means less than 1 degree KH.
Don't think u need large scale water change.30- 50% maybe, or just add some baking soda to bring the KH up gradually.

I have the same situation... Hence, it is not possible to using kH/pH method to do CO2 testing...
Thanks guys for the replies.
Valice : You mentioned the reason to the KH reading is due to the the ADA soil? Any other alternatives?
My fishes are ok and plants are ok also for now ...
Just did a 50% water change erhmm still same reading from the KH kit.
Thank you appreaciate the reponses.
If you don't add Bicarbonate of soda, your kH will continue to be low because our tap water is very low in kH.
Mix some Sodium Bicarbonate with some tank water in a container and drip this mixture into your tank to bring up the kH gradually.
Eventually the "peat effect" of ADA will wear out.
