I am currently trying spiky moss, and I think it is great.
planning to create a moss lawn in replaced for my E.tenellus. spiky moss are my present choice now.
it's for 4ft, not covering entire foreground. anyone can recommend which moss will look good for large scale lawn? hopefully got pictures to share? thankx!
will ruled out taiwan moss, as their growth are pretty fast.

hi, just a qns...
To create a moss lawn do u need to start off by tying the moss onto a wire mesh w netting? Any other methods?
Thanks!
Yup. It is best to tie the moss onto a wire mesh. You can also tie moss to stones, rocks or driftwood depending on the requirement for your tank scape.Originally Posted by yampeck

netting may not be required unless it is riccia.Originally Posted by yampeck
wackytpt, will consider trying out on spiky moss
Personally I think Taiwan moss looks the bestNot that I've tried many moss lawns though heh.
Likewise I am thinking of thrashing my current tenellus + hairgrass lawn and coverting it to a moss or HC lawn.
Would like to hear more on this and on whether a wire mesh should be used to have moss grown and the most appropriate sort of moss to be used, btw, mine would cover the front of my 5 footer.

If you guys have been to NA, they have a very nice moss tank near the entrance. If you look closely those are spiky moss that's being tied to wire meshes, so maybe you guys can give it a try![]()
I just placed my spiky moss directly on the substrate... And they grow on the substrate very quickly... And then spread quite fast too...It doubled in size in a month or 2... IMO, it grows faster but neater than Taiwan moss.

Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
grey_fox , be thrashing away e.tenellus lawn too, find that they outgrown very fast. mostly likely opting for spiky moss, indeed they turn out very nice. agree, they are neater than taiwan moss. hope to see your upcoming lawn!Originally Posted by grey_fox
I've just gotten myself willow moss. Any1 ever had experience with it before? Contemplating whether to put it as a foreground type? or tie it to a DW would be better? Any advise?
If use spiky moss as lawn, will it be too long for foreground?
For Java moss, how you guys suggest to use as?
Sorry for hi-jacking your thread, Bro.

I think spiky moss will look great. Don't have it as a lawn but tied it to some stones and left it as a base to cover the driftwood legs. I like spiky moss for its lush, fresh green colour. Much better than Java moss imo.
Have seen mosses tied to strips of thin glass if you need to cover a generally flat terrain. Plastic meshes tend to curl.
Psst...beware of the armless swordsman!

Yup I agree Tenellus grows too fast, same goes for the HG I have and now its all mixed up (Should have listened to Standoyo when I did the major rescape) but I have to say, I like the 'wild' look however, I noticed some Cladophora around the hairgrass in particular. I guess I'll have to wait a bit, a little busy with work at the moment but would like to see your lawn as well

Yeah I agree, Chan's moss foreground tank looks good and very lush I must add.Originally Posted by axela11

Kemp, willow moss will grow TOO SLOWLY to be a nice lawn... I gave up on using it as a lawn... IMO, it looks much nicer on wood...![]()

Thanks bro for the advise. Was surfing upon a few pictures of willow moss, did noticed that most of them are on wood.
Will tie them to wood tonight![]()

personally i would still prefer java moss to be tie to DW. why don't you consider cutting up your exisiting DW? (if possible)
Java moss is good for anything space filling, IMO...I used them just like that, sitting them on wood or substrate to just fill some voids, thinning them once in a while... They are also good to grow as emersed on areas protruding from the tank...

If you think a driftwood is too big maybe you can try some smaller rocks?
