    Hi all

Thinking of setting up a new 1' tank for cheeries & CRS.

A 1' tank with PL light using ADA soil (is Amazonia ok?) and moss. No CO2, no fan. Is this a suitable setup?

    Your advice and comments welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

no aeration? I'm personally using an air pump with internal sponge filter that would introduce minimal heat into the water

"No fan" - that is probably a no no ... if you are setting the tank in a non air-con environment.

In an air-con environment, I am not sure, as I never had the opportunity to setup tanks in aircon environment

    Thanks for your feedback.

Oh, yes, there will be an external filter, probably an Eden 501.

Does PL light generates more heat, how about changing to FL?

invest a fan for your setup! chances of breeding them be higher, and mosses certainly do well in low temperature!

hope to see your shrimp tank soon

Hi, If you intend to keep CRS, it requires lower temperature between 24 to 26 deg. You will not be able to achieve the required temperature without any fan or chiller.

Cherry is easy, CRS is more demanding. My setup is simple - bare tank with some moss, no filtration.

    Yes that's Vodka Cherry (shrimplets).

    Hi Alan

    Thanks for sharing.

How's your moss doing in the shrimp tank without any light? Also, without filteration, how often do you need to do a water change?

moss would always need clean water. So filtration is a must for them to grow healthy. WC? yes of course. weekly WC would be just ideal.
i would suggest that you'll need fan to cool your tank. Since you've already decided to invest in such good gravel, why not invest a little more for a fan?

    Hi Richy,

I place my shrimp tank at the balcony, so there's ample natural daylight for the mosses. WC is almost daily, between 25-50% depending on how filthy it is. Use a length of airline to suck out the shrimp poos and left over food scraps. Replacement water is from my planted tank. There isn't that many mosses in my tank. I just leave a few scraps (loose scraps that came off from my main tank's wall) for the shrimps to hide.

The vodka bottle idea... just trying out this feeding method for the shrimplets. I put the bottle (with water) out in the sun for a week to let algae grow in it. When it's ready, I'll put shrimplets in there to feast. And swap the bottle out to sun again.

    Hi Alan

What's the temperature of you shrimp tank when placed at the balcony? I am a bit concerned about the heat from the sunlight, wouldn't it be too warm for the shrimps?

    Thank you for sharing.

I intend to add a fan blowing 24hrs on this new 1' tank. Due to its size, will 2 fans be too much? If only 1 fan, any suggestion on the type of fan that I should use (size, brand, etc)?

    Thanks.

balcony daytime temp hovers around 30C, night goes down to 26C. No direct sunlight. Surprisingly my cherries are ok with this range. Once I move them to my car porch (took them out for a walk, hehe) and forgot to bring them back in... under the sun for 2-3 hrs... temp soared to 32C... sigh, lost a few babies.

It may be a case where my cherries are acclimatised to the temp because these are 1st & 2nd batch bred from 8 adults. Earlier I lost 2 adults due to temperature, at 30C.

personal opinion, 1 fan will be good enough.
You can get this Profantec fan, it's one of those least noisy ones.

Kemp, thanks for your suggestion. Any idea what is the size and cost? Also, any preferred supplier?

Thanks for all of you who have feedback.
