I'm playing with the idea of having a planted tank. But does anyone here keep a planted tank with no fish at all?

Or if tank only has shrimps, do you have to feed them?

    Thanks!

Should be possible. You just need to add in the necessary nutrients, CO2 and light.
What's more - maybe you don't need any cannister filters or such as no fish waste to break down. A simple powerhead can do.

I have never fed my office tank at all(beside me by the window). Its a planted tank and contains shrimps. The shrimps feed on the plants. I just need to top up the water now and then.

Plants only tanks - my only concern is will it breed mosquito?

It is good to have some shrimps in it, need not feed them as long as the shrimps have not start feeding on your plants

One more concern is the source of N and P. Usually these comes from the fish and fish food. Normal liquid fert do not contain these.

Tap water may contain some amount of N and P. But these are macro nutrients which are used up pretty fast. Water change could replenish N and P. But not sure whether it will last between water changes.

Alternatively you can add N and P via KNO3 and KH2PO4 or plant tabs/spikes which supply NPK.

    thanks again!

jacian, i've been wondering: if i've a rainbar causing slight surface water movement, will mosquitoes still breed?

also considering putting a couple of platys into the planted tank. will the fries (not sure how big) get into the ecco 2233's filter inlet? if not possible, will just leave my neons in there.

by the way, talking about mosquitoes in tanks. this morning witnessed a mosquito sitting on the surface of one of my bettas' tank. lazy bum ignored the intruder!!![:0] []

I have mosquito breeding before in my 5 Gal all Cory tank.
By the time I noticed, only the larva skin is left floating.

Get guppies, they will definitely attack the mosquitoes.
