This message will probably only make sense if you own the 2026 model:

I've been running an eheim Pro II 2026 canister filter for a little over a year. Recently i took the thing apart to clean it up and replace some of the media. When i put the thing back together, i couldn't get it going again. The priming pump when pressed doesn't fill the filter with water. I tried filling it by hand, but that did nothing for me. When plugged in the motor and fan work just fine and i farely certain that everything is hooked up right. Any comments that could help me out would be appreciated.

    thanks!!!!

I got it working. I skipped the pump idea and filled the filter using the installation kit 1. I'm glad i got it to work but i still don't exactly know how to fix the problem. Is it as simple as using vasoline on the primer thing, or is there more to it. and if it's that easy, how do i do that????
    and comments would help

There could be many other factors that affect the proper operation of your filter, such as length of inlet & outlet hoses, height of filter compared to tank water height, outlet hose above or below tank water level.

As far as I know you need to fill up as much water (to the brim) of the filter before turning it on. Priming works only if there is enough water and with little air to purge.

I have problems priming the 2026 too... That's why I HATE to stop the filter flow or to clean the filter. To get the flow re-started is so troublesome for me I once wanted to just give the filter up... I was all wet from pespiration by then and the floor was all wet from the spilt water from the canister and the water I used to fill the hose manually... Is this a 2026 problem?

Typical problems of priming is caused by wearing out of the O-ring (the black rubber ring) around the round motor portion where u apply the vaseline. Replacement of it should be ard SGD20~30. You can try Y618 or C328 if they have the replacement.

Kpete4, welcome to AQ! To answer your question.

Since you are using the Installation Kit 1, you wouldn't need to prime the filter anymore! Believe me, it will work you out till you sweat! The next time you do a filter maintenance, you would need to fill the canister filter with water and fix everything back. When you connect back the quick release connector, you only need to open the Installation Kit 1 cap and fill that hose full with water. Closed that cap back and start the motor. The hose connected to the Installation Kit/Set 1 must be full of water and must be connected to the intake hose of the filter. When it is full of water and you switch on the filter, the hose that is full of water will create a suction occurence that will pull in the water form your tank into the filter.

Justikanz, I personally believe Eheim may/may not be aware of this problem. The Eheim Installation Kit/Set 1 could be created to address this problem. I've experience so much distress from using this filter model that I ended up buying the Installation Kit/Set 1 for EVERY 2026 model I have. I would not spend even a minute to prime this filter. Do the steps that I've written above to lighten your burden. Of the 3 2026 that I have, 2 are 2nd hand ones so I believe the priming function might have worn off.

The 2026 model are work horse in my personal experience, just that their achilles heel is the priming function. If you have extra cash and is into this hobby in the long run, grab a Installation Set/Kit 1 to lighten your burden of having to prime this filter. You'll also need 1 empty bottle for you to use to pour the water into the Installation Set/Kit 1.

    Hope this helps!

I had the same experience with 2213. Learnt from one of the seller to use a small pump to pump the water into the suction tube (inside the tank) so to force water to go into the carnister until all the carnister is filled up and pushed out all the air.

Now I use PVC with ball-valve for my dustbin size 2262. Never see another priming day for 2 years , as the PVC pipe always full of water during weekly WC.

    Cheers

Thanks BFG!! I will keep a lookout for the Installation Kit 1. But I had been avoiding touching the filter now, not to mention cleaning the filter! Heh heh...

Maybe that's why your tank always have suspending particles... The filter media is probably saturated by all the stuff kicked up during your rescape...

    Hi Kpete4,
I love my 2026, like fellow forumers I think it's a workhorse. Actually, the filter has not given me any problems. Just fill to the brim, prime once and voila! I see you have gotten yourself the installation set 1. I have never look back after trying them out.
Usually, when I prime I look at the outlet when there is water movement I on the filter. It will grumble a while when the air is expelled, then it goes into auto-pilot. But then again, you need to do that anymore do you.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it. This might make you guys laugh a little, but i got the installation kits with the aquarium about a year and a half ago, and i had no idea that they were to help get the aquarium running. I thought they just shot it out of all the little holes and spread the flow out. It wasn't until i pulled out the instruction manual for the kits that i figured out how big of an idiot i was. I got it working and i will probably never pump the thing again!!!!!!
thanks for putting up with me

Please refer to this thread for the proper way to prime Eheim filter if you do not have the installation set 1. It seems many people are doing it wrongly. You are not suppose to fill the filter with water when you connect it back.

    Neon,
You don't need to use a pump if you follow the procedure described in the above link.

I e-mailed a support guy from eheim before I posted this thread. He responded to me today with this:

In order for the priming system to work properly please make sure the priming device comes up and down easily. Also make sure the white indicator ball (or red bushing) is properly installed in the maintenance indicator and that the canister is empty of all water before priming.

I really doesn't help at all except he clarifies that the canister should be empty of water, which i was already doing

The manual pump on the filter is meant to start the siphoning action. The canister is left empty to allow for the water to siphon from the tank to the filter thus priming the centrifugal pump.

If you push the manual pump and there is no suction to pull the water in from the inlet tube, there might be a leak somewhere. When the filter is total empty, the water just need to be pull pass the u-tube and below the water level in the tank, the siphoning action will start. In no time, the filter will be filled and the air will be ejected from the outlet tube.

I am using Rena filter now. I must say that I prefer Rena design over Eheim's.

It's certain true in my case too. By using the installation kit 1, the changing of media of Eheim 2026 is very easy.
