Good that you are finding out more about the discus before intending to buy any. Will you be housing them in a bare tank or a planted tank?

If its a planted tank you will need to note that they cannot live with ALL kinds of fishes.

    Requirements are the following.

    1. Read up more.
    2. Clean water
    3. Warmer waters ( I keep mine at 26-27 degrees)
    4. Again, read up more.

I would suggest that you visit http://www.simplydiscus.com and find out more from there.

Don't forget that discus are pretty sensitive fishes.

Bare tanks are easier to keep and rear discuses IMO, you'll eliminate more possibilities of your discus getting sick, if you're serious about keeping discus, I would suggest a bare-only tank and nothing more.

However, the ultimate challenge would be to house them in a fully planted tank

It is a common misconception that discus cannot do well in planted tanks or with tank mates.

I had discus lay eggs for me the last time I had them. And they are in a planted tank with lots of tetras and other fish.

I had also seen many other people having success with their discus this way.

You just need to look out for sudden changes in water perimeters, drop in water temperature and keep them away from smaller fish (they will snack on them) and fast, panicky fish (they will scare the discus). In other words, you must be diligent with the tank maintenance work... This is very important, I neglected my tank for 2,3 months due to work and my discus started to get sick...

Oh, try not to keep them with angels too. When the angels try to breed, they are no fight with the angels... My breeding angels killed all my discus... After they got sick...

So, what I want to say is, you can keep discus in planted tanks and with tankmates too. However, you must be able to keep up with tank maintenance work.

Oh! Btw, I still agree that if you want to seriously breed discus, you should keep them in a bare tank for easy maintenance...
