I am using eheim 2028 for my 4"x2"x1.5" tank, room temperature is 27-28C.
now looking for a chiller to cool down the tank to 24-25C.

so what is the size of the chiller i require to meet the expected temp of 24-25C.

Because you want to keep your tank quite cool around 24C I would suggest something no smaller than a 1/3 hp or 1/2hp chiller. If you have or intend to use MH’s, these lights put out a lot of heat and would influence the decision.

I remember seeing a good buy a while ago and commenting as much on this link, there was also a summary of the BTU’s / tanks size for different Artica chillers:

    He might still have it?

I agree. Although 1/5Hp is already good enough for your tank according to the specification, it will take about 45min to an hour plus to cool to your desired temperature. 1/3HP will be around 15-20mins, and there is lesser wear and tear.

i have check using the JBJ cal to find the chiller size, it state a 1/10 chiller .

    tank spec :

    - 80 US gallon. 67 UK gallon or 305L
    - PL 4x36x 10hr ( from 12pm to 10pm )
    - room temp= 27-28C
    - filter eheim proII 2028 power comsumtion =20w

and i find that 1/2 is abit over size ?

any bro out there have 4ft tank and using chiller, do give ur comments.

yes 1/2hp is a bit over size, but better to be over than under.

My tank dimensions 48 x 24 x 30 filled to about 2.5 cm’s from the top = crude water volume 500L or 132US Gallons. Desired temperature is +/-0.5 around 26.7 degrees. I will try to document two lighting examples, Normal & Extreme

    General:
    Chiller housed inside cabinet
Temperature set to 26.7 so chiller kicks in at 27.3 and draws down the water temperature to 26.2 before switching off

    Normal Lighting
Lighting duration 8 hours with T5 HO’s 4 x 54w = 216 watts - 1/5hp Chiller is ok, but wish I had bought the 1/4hp. Living room gets stuffy, lucky that Aircon is on often.

    Extreme Lighting
Lighting 216 watts + 300MH’s = 516watts. The MH’s are 6 inches from the water surface-- 1/5hp Chiller cannot bring down temperature without the aircon assistance.

---If aircon is NOT on, and the chiller is NOT on when the MH’s start then the water temperaturewill rise to 27.3, triggering the chiller to kick in, then the water temperature will rise above 27.3 into the unknown territory as the MH’s are like heating elements. Simply put the 1/5hp is inadequate.

---If aircon is ON, and the chiller is NOT on when the MH’s start then the water temperature will rise to 27.3 triggering the chiller to kick in, then the water temperature will peak a few tenths of a degree higher slowly come down at an estimated 0.2 degrees per hour, taking 5 hours, the last 0.2 taking the most time. Simply put the 1/5hp is not adequate in these conditions.

---If aircon is ON, and the chiller is ON when the MH’s start then the water temperature will be maintained at the temperature the water was at when the MH’s started. The 1/5hp is adequate.

Currently the MH’s are on 2.0 hours a day, except weekends with they might be on 5 hours, as I like the intensity of the lights, but the room environment is controlled when this occurs

    Hope this helps

Decided to check the water temp the other day with a reliable thermometer and found that my chillier thermostat was not aligned, that is to say the chiller was reading 26.7 and the water temperature was about THREE degrees lower!

So recalibrated the chiller and probably good advice to others to double check readings every now and then.

I am using an Artica 1/5hp on my 500lt tank as described above.

I also have another chiller, TECO TR10 on a much smaller tank.

Good catch Rupert! Sometimes, we are complacent and assume everything is running as normal as the day we set up our equipment. You might even caught hearing Murphy grumbling behind you when you discovered the anomaly.
