Lots of tetras are bred in captivity. Neons, pencilfish and Black(skirt/widow) tetras are some examples.
I used to find baby pencilfish in my tank once in a few months...![]()
Hi Guys
Kept some platinum or gold tetras as some people called it in my 2ft cube tank and tdy today after my water change after awhile, i found a small dying tetra fry !
Thought tetra can't breed in captivity? Anyway attached is a picture and the fry is abt about 3mm long. Unfortunately am not gd good with my camera and can't take gd good picture of it.
Anyway am still keeping the dead fish if anybody want to keep a nice picture for archive.
Rgs Regards
Stephen

Oh, no, please!... Some tetras are really difficult to breed in our tanks. I meant no harm...Anyway, it is always a pleasant surprise to find fries (tetras or not) inside our tanks.

Nice Fry, too bad they didnt survive.
Long time ago, i had 2 planted+tetra tanks. One was on a stand in the living room, the other was just tuck to one corner on the floor. The one on the floor, which no one disturbs, as in very little human influence/contact, walking etc.
That tank, had lemon tetras fries, but i only found out when i had to decommision it, and only caught some glimpse of the fries, which when the water cleared, wasnt around any more.
The affinity that tetras cannot be bred is limited by possibility.
Wonder if cardinals can be bred in captivity....?
I read on the net, Cardinal egg and fries are light sensitive. if expose to light the egg/fries dies. So unless you have a very dark corner in the tank or specially prepare the proper condition, it is not likely that you can have cardinal fries. "IMHO"
I had Otocinclus spawn before I decommission my 4ft (due to housing sale) was really surprise when I saw a few small OtoCat about 1cm+... but all died when I transfer them to another tank.
I think the eggs being sensitive to light is to be applied generally to almost all tetra eggs. But it could also be possible that tank bred tetras' eggs could be more tolerant...
Generally, most fish will spawn when they like the environment that are in and there are few disturbances from humans.
I wonder if regular water changes and trimming will disturb them...![]()
