Nevermind the dwarf puffer fish. They eat shrimps confirmed.![]()
Hi all,
Now that I have my shrimp tank started, I am looking at maybe adding a couple of fishes to eat mosquito larves and add more colour to the tank. I recently spotted 2 guppies in a feeder bag at C328, one totally white and the other totally black, think they may look stunning in the shrimp tank. But do they eat shrimps???
I also found some dwarf puffer fish in my LFS. Think they look damn cute![]()
I read that they eat snails...are they ok with shrimps?
How about badis badis?? Are they also known as Kilifish? They good with shrimps??
Would love some advice.![]()

the white and black guppies, most likely identified as mollies, cherry shrimps are pretty safe from them.
if you intend to breed cherry shrimps, be sure to provide more hiding spaces, chances be higher. Used to have sae, otos, neon tetras in my 4ft tank, had them removed, now into breeding shrimps.
as for other fishes, others may give you some comments.
Trigonostigma espei or hengeli should do well with shrimps, as with small cories such as pygmy, hastatus or hasbrocus and ruby tetras.
Boraras maculata, merah, briggitae will also do well .
Clown killies as well, and unfortunately, only clown killies. Other killies will wipe out your shrimp population.
I dont have much experience with badis though, so cannot guarantee you, but the above fishes will do.
Cheers,
Andrew
Are they to be kept in your filterless small shrimp tank? I suggest you don't keep fish... Or try 5 Boraras spp.. All other fish will eat your shrimplets, if your shrimps ever breed, and if I don't remember wrongly, you want teh shrimps to breed in that tank... Do a serach for the different kinds of Boraras spp. available...
Post edit: Glad that you added a filter. But still, Boraras spp. would be the only fish you should consider, taking into account the tank size.

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
I have 6 B. merah in my shrimp tank and they are very good companions... But they can be difficult to feed as they have such small mouths and without any filter in your tank, there might be a problem when you feed too much just to ensure that they get their food...
just a question...possible to add darwf puffer into my shrimp tank..get rid of snails, and transfer to my 2ft tank back again?shrimps are adult size...
Badis badis love shrimplets.![]()
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.
Dwarf puffers also love shrimps... as food.![]()

Haha of course there were found to be exceptions to the case. If you are lucky enough, you may get one thats totally vegetarian! Haha...but thats as rare as my cherries growing wings.
Someone did mention that if you get dwarf puffer at a young age and get them to acclimatise to your community tank, they might leave your other tank inhabitants alone...Anyone found one???
By the way, Justikanz, whats Boraras sp? I can't find any image or details about it on the net. What's their size, diet, water conditions, where to get, and cost?
Can't find Boraras pictures on the net? That's because we kept all of them in AQ Photo Gallery.Do a search here http://www.aquaticquotient.com/gallery/search.php?c= .

Juggler's tanks
Puffers feed primarily on live foods... they can hardly change that nature. It is like trying to feed Oreo to tigers......?

Nope, the search turns out nothing for me. Boraras spp is the correct spelling?

Haha...if you throw Oreo cookies to tigers, they will probably open it and lick the creamy centre with their long tongue!I think they will eat the Oreo and then eat the one who fed them the Oreo

Wonder if I net out my single 1 cm swordtail fry from my turtle tank and placed it with the shrimps, would they grow up as childhood friends and never eat each others future offsprings? Hehe worth a try.

sp is the short form for species. It basically lumps all the species together instead of telling you Boraras merah, Boraras briggitae, etc etc...
Edit: It is a scientific short form used in literature, including scientific ones. NOT like the shorthand or sms short forms.

Heh Heh!
Check out this thread on Dwarf Puffers coexisting with Cherries. I think it might be possible, though a major risk.

I've hill stream loach inside with cherries,so far so good.
maybe you can try clown loach, they really keep snails population down but i dont know will they attack shrimps when they grow bigger.
my OTOs would just leave my cherries alone. so my vote goes to OTOs
