DIY-Modifying metal stand into Cabinet

hi all,
currently having 3mths long holiday. so want to try DIY and modify my current 2tier metal stand into a cabinet look-alike stand. (cos mum nags that all the equipment make the living rm look messy.. )

anybody got any experience how to go about it, from getting the correct wood to drillin into the metal stand >> making the door??thxs in advance..
and
any folks know where can i find/buy custome made wood?? not sure if IKEA do sell custome made size wood for the customers.

I DIYed my stand into a cabinet.
You need 4 pieces of wood. Go to hardware shops and ask for plywood will do.
Mine came in a big piece and I sawed it myself to size...

Get 4 pieces of hinges and same sized screws. Of course, the drill bit to use will depend on the size of the screws.

Hi,

If you're super paranoid like me and is afraid that drilling will compromise the integrity of the stand. You can do what I did.

I bought 8 pieces of hard cardboard from popualr bookstore (those use for school projects type), each cost around $4. Then I use double sided tape and attach magnets at the back of the board, and simply stick the board to the stand. You can also use velcro if you want.

Will try to take a pic, but earliest I could post them is next week.

yeah bro... buying those corrugated boards from popular bookshop will be cheaper an dless tedious work than wood but might not look as nice... but you can buy those wood-look-alike laminates and stick on the corrugated boards...

As requested for the picture to my DIY cabinet stand.

This is the full shot of the end result.



The hinges which I used for fixing the door.



In order to secure the side panels, L-plates were used. The size was wrong when me and my dad bought the stuff.



And finally the base of the cabinet.



Hope it give you some idea on how to use plywood. Guess using the cardboard method is easier compared to what we did.

I try to make sure that water doesn't stay too long on the wood such that it is absorbed into the plywood. Regarding the cost, I can't remember already. Sorry about that.

wow.. i never thought bout that, but i guess the drilling need to be done before you setup the tank.. else very risky.. that gives me idea now! thanks valice!

Nope... the drilling was done with the tank already up for about a year... The wood was only fixed on something in the beginning of the year...
The stand is quite an old one...

What the stand needs now is some paint work... Which I have procrastinated since CNY...

lol...i was wondering if saw those wood-like surface coating @ DIY shop, that we can paste on top of the plywood to give it a nicer finishing

Get this (see picture as I'm not sure the correct term) for wall patching and buy yourself a spray paint.

Create some design on the front panels or even both sides if visible, let it dry then spray paint over it. Once completed it will look gorgeous.
