i think we must "educate" other sports fans 'cos in future, who knows, they may be charging premium for live telecast for Cricket World Cup, NBA Final, Grnad Prix, Grand Slam, Golf, Olympics, SEA games and the list goes on.....

i will be the one of the first to cross over should there be other cable TV provider S'pore...

Hey zyblack, time to consider other provider... M1... Singtel...

Nah...I won't be so hasty as to put down Starhub right away. As a local company, they been through lots of tough times to get to where they are today. I still remember the times when there were only 1 telecom operator and thats Singapore Telecom. And then there was the time of numerous operators like Sunpage and some other forgotten names. Only 2 of them emerge as market leaders besides main monopoly Singtel. I had issues with their services at times like when I was double-charged for my mobile bills but ,like juggler says, I am over it.

Charging a premium for WC 2006 is a logical move for the company from the business point of view. Since Mediacorp surrender the air time rights for WC 2006 to them and having paid a huge sum for that, It is only fair to cover back the cost of that investment. I guess Mediacorp knows it is not viable for them to buy the air time rights and still operate on that minimal fees we pay them via the TV license fees. They can't suddenly up the fees just for WC unlike Starhub which as a commercial entity can.

As a consumer, we frequently question the acts of businesses making money out of opportunity. If we put ourselves into the shoes of the CEO of the company, we would garner a different perspective. Of course if they do charge money for NBA Final and Cricket World Cup, then I guess it is stepping a little over the line. Yet the only other alternative is to pay higher TV license fee so that Mediacorp can buy all the rights over these sporting events. Remember that Malaysians pay TV license fees as well so the WC 2006 that they are watching ain't exactly free. Besides, they have a much larger population than Singapore and assuming they pay the same amount or slightly lesser than us, they would still have more funds to play around compared to Mediacorp.

Of course the next entity in line that we can point our fingers to is, of course, the organisers of such sporting events. They are the one who charges fees for air time rights. Right now, it may look like they are the evil ones but dig a little deeper and you shall see that they are only right to do this. Most sporting events like this do not have funding from the governments . They rely heavily on sponsors to finance the whole campaign and these companies get free advertising in return. TV companies from various countries also pay money to get rights to show it in their countries. Without these funding, I doubt any of this sporting events will operate as smoothly as they do now.

All this is done just for the benefit of the consumers, which in turn generate profit for the companies. It is one big engine running and if we as consumers pull the plug, pardon the pun, everything will go to ground. By the way, I am no way connected to any of the entities mentioned in this post except as a consumer so I am taking an unbiased point of view.

Best of luck in the World Cup bets and enjoy the beautiful game.

Good analysis! I hope "they" read the sentence : "if we as consumers pull the plug, pardon the pun, everything will go to ground"

Wonder if our neighbours have channels for tactical view or player view or half/full time analysis by their "expert"? How many of us really appreciate those "extra" channels except for coaches? As for the HT/FT analysis, why can't we have Mr. Tohari Paijan/Fandi/Brain Richmond/Sundramoorthy etc. (sorry for the wrong spelling, if any) doing all those analysis for us? Just because Singaporean (me included) are always good at making excuses for others people's action?

The point is we, as consumers, are not given any choice except to sign up or miss out. Most of us are working and certainly won't watch all the matches, especially those 12mn and 3am matches. They have the pay-per-view function and could always activate the option.

In S'pore, we are always forced to make "no choice" decision. I just hope that with competition, we, as consumers, would have more choices. And the only way to make our opinion heard is to do what their pocket hurt... (it ryhmes! )

Seems like Mediacorp have stopped showing a lot of sports programs. As far as I know, the usual ones shown being golf, wrestling and our S-league. Sometimes notable events like some recent badminton tournament held in Singapore or certain EPL football matches are shown live.

I enjoy watching athletics and gymnastics events but these are not shown any more. Many years ago, I get to see them now and then, even when they are shown several weeks or months after the event.

Did anyone notice that? Or they were shown but I missed it?

i reckon they don't have tactical view, player view, european "expert"...

Starhub is the best in the world!!!!!! next world cup we will have dressing room view, toilet view, bathroom view, player's shorts view but never will have starhub ceo bank account view...

True ... that's what my office colleague said that the world cup channel is worth the money paid as they have so many "views" - previews, post-match reviews, interviews etc... 24/7 coverage.

Just now I watch the Togo vs Switzerland match on their Free Preview channel. After the match manage to get some of the dressing room interview with the Togo coach, but no translation leh... maybe next time there would?

    Goal!!!

    SPAIN 3 - 1 TUNISIA

    !!!!!GOAL!!!!

Oh my god!!! Most exciting match I have seen so far! Down 0-1 halftime, roar back 3-1 full time. Heart nearly failed several times! Hehe won 100 bucks!! WOOT!!!

    Look at the stats:
    12' [0 - 1] J. Mnari
    30' C. Puyol
    32' A. Ayari
    40' H. Trabelsi
    70' R. Jaidi
    71' Raul [1 - 1]
    76' F. Torres [2 - 1]
    80' H. Gmamdia
    85' Z. Jaziri
    89' C. Fabregas
    90' F. Torres (pen.) [3 - 1] J. Mnari

    shots on target : 10 - 3
    shots off target : 13 - 1
    possession (%) : 67 - 33
    corner kicks : 12 - 1
    offsides : 1 - 5
    fouls : 11 - 21
    yellow cards : 2 - 6
    red cards : 0 - 0

Nowadays...too many last min goals...australia, germany, brazil, england, korea..too many heart attacks... Now must watch the last 10 mins of the game to be sure of the score.

noticed that since the world cup started, there is absolutely no soccer action (re-run of FA cup ties, EPL, spanish league, champions league etc) on channel 22, 23 or 24...

Not bad huh? And free some more....
Just enough so we don't lose sleep and feel groggy at work.

If want to catch some more matches, will have to go to the coffeeshops.

I tried setting up a simple V-shape antenna and manage to get quite good reception for RTM2. Manage to get Indo channel but very bad, audio good though.

Strange... I can only see the daily schedule for RTM 1 or 2. Can't find the weekly version.

Anyway, RTM 1 showing the Argentina vs Mexico match at 2am, 25-Jun.
    RTM 2 nothing on.
