    hi
I am new to tropical aquarium keeping and my eyes are about to fall out. I have web searched to no avail. I have recently purchased two red devil oscars.Unfortunatley i am unable to get a photo to add as aquarium is in a dificult postion to photograph. My problem is my two red devils are totally diffrent the "red" one has settled into its new home and is eating fine ect. The other one was extremly vicsious to its tank mate so of course expecting this we have them in their own tanks now. I am unable to find a picture of young red devils my problem is the "un red" red devil is not eating and after being the aggressor is now very listless and timid. Also its eyes are diffrent from its ex-tank mate is this usual do red devil eyes take on a diffrent colour as they mature or have i been sold two completley diffrent fish I am worried as not knowing what type of fish it is i have no idea of it dietary needs. It is black and grey in colour and approx 20cm in length it has dark eyes with gold outer ring. I was told by the dealer that both fish were from same spawning? ergo same fish but this dosent seem to be the case or do some fish take longer than 3 to 4 days to settle in? any helpfull advice would be greatly appreciated

Err... Are your fish the albino or red oscars or the red devils? These are different fish...

The red devil is more agressive than the oscar...

Both fish can be induced to feed with feeder fish (check for parasites and please gut load) but can be weaned off and learn to take cichlid pellets...

It is best if you can provide pictures for properly ID, especially if the 2 fish are different...

    hi

they were supposed to be red devils but are different from each other
they don't seem to like anything but other fish, the red red devil eats all smaller fish immediatly but the non red red devil only eats one feeder fish a day but both refuse any other type of food.

sorry I can't add a photo but my main problem is that allthough they are supposed to be the same type of fish their eyes are totally different is this possible?

(EDIT: Please try to spell properly. Else it is difficult to read your messages)

You can refer to the pics in the links below to establish if you have an oscar or a red devil. It is not uncommon for fish to take weeks or even months to settle in our tank, depending on the source and condition prior to getting them. As long as they take feeders, let them be and you can slowly move them to pellets once they have bulked up and settled. Good Luck.

Thank you. finally I can see my fishies on the internet. Barney and Elmo are both red devils (which is what i wanted) I never found those photos my fears are allayed. I am still feeding with cheap feeder fish and offering my brats ox heart and pellets (even though they turning noses up) and they seem to be now happy as they destroy my beautiful aquascaped tanks lol. thank you all for your help

Kalindab, the red devils will dig and move your things around. They are not going to appreciate your aquascape and will do a lot of re-arrangement. That is their natural behaviour. There is nothing much you can do about that...

Plants will NOT do well too.

They will not really take beef heart and pellets yet. Try starving them for 2-3 days, then throw in (yes, throw) the feeder fish. Soon, they will associate the throwing with food and take pellets and beef heart the moment they hit the water.

By the way, please spell properly and avoid sms language. Thanks!

    Hello
Thankyou for the advice I will give it a try. I did read up on my choice of fish before purchase but like everybody I had high hopes of a beautifull tank looking the way I wanted it to (I can live in fairyland it is peacefull here) Allthough I must admit watching my babes rearrange the tank has become a very interesting pass time.(thankyou after my last post I realised why my posts had been edited and apologise for not realising sooner)
thankyou again for all your very helpfull suggestions
