Hello guys, just got a question. My planted tank average temperature are around 29-30 plus degree celsius. Want to bring it down to 27-28 so i can keep some moss. wonder if i can DIY a mineral water bottle frozen and put it into the tank. Anyone ever tried that before? Or any suggestion other then getting a cooler fan? Appreciate if people with relevant experience can help. thanks alot.

Think this topic was discussed before... The best way to maintain the cool water temperature is either using a fan or a chiller. The problem with using a frozen water bottle is that the water temperature fluctuations will be quite great... And you have to keep doing it... And also, you would need to make sure the water bottle surface is clean... Might as well get a fan...

Any reason why you would not want a fan?

thought of gettng a fan but is the power consumption high? mine is a 4ft by 18 x18 tank with a 4ft pl maqnum balast light. If im to get a fan is 1 enough or 2? Whats the price for a fan? im still very new to planted tank, have been reading alot from this web but think im still lost....all the ph, co2 measurement things and etc. Really did not know planted tank is so complicated. All my science teacher fault...only told me plants need water, co2 and light. But seems to me its not the case...

You just need a fan and itcost less than 20 dollars... Get the one in the styrofoam box. It is a Sunon fan which if you overclock your computer before, will know that it is one of the most powerful and quiet fan around...

Power consumption is minimal compared to a chiller and the effort of putting bottles into freezer and then into the tank...

Constant sudden changes will give you a big ICH problem... Trust us... 1 fan is enough... Put it at 45 deg tilt...

But why would you want to do so, stereo? Sudden water changes (ice being thrown in, melted, forgotten, repeat cycle - the water temperature will keep changing) is not good for fish or plants... A fan will keep it constant and it is not expensive...

GER, a fan's wattage is much less than the lights... Just go and buy a fan. Saves you A LOT of trouble... In fact, you will forget it and will only remember it when you are doing spring cleaning! For a 4ft tank, try to get the ones that come in a styrofoam box. That fan is powerful enough for a 4ft, though I prefer to use 2, especially in such hot weather now... My tank temperature is maintained at 26-28C with the fan being switched on for 24 hours...

Overall, getting a fan will be the wiser choice. It will really save you the trouble of adding iced water, cubes into your tank. Planted tank are supposed to be enjoyable

What kind of fan is this?

Everyone is stating "For a 4ft tank, try to get the ones (Fans) that come in a styrofoam box. That fan is powerful enough for a 4ft"

What kind of fan is this. Can someone show a picture. I am not sure what kind of fan setup you have on your tanks. I am from Canada, where the heat has never bene a problem. Now in Taiwan, my 4 foot tank is boiling at around 30 degrees today. Already starting to see plants melting!!

Please show a picture of your fan setup. Is this just a house fan (desktop one)?

The fan we are talking about is actually a computer fan. If I am not wrong, it is a 12' fan. Brand is Sunon.

Taiwan's computer modders will be familiar with these fans as they are normally used to cool down overclocked CPUs and motherboards...

I have seen the aquarium next to NA putting a 1.25 litre frozen coke bottle in the tank. But I would think this kind of temp fluctuation not too good for the fishes.

if you are growing java moss, you don't need a fan. imho, taiwan moss doesn't always need cool temps either. it does quite well in my lowtech planted tank, which is in partial sunlight in the morning and early afternoon. just my 2cents' worth!

I have failed with taiwan moss at 29degC. Anything below that the moss should be able to grow. A fan would definitely be useful. Keep the bottle for use in times of really hot weather. That's what I do at least. Works well so far.
