but how you know the old shell belong to the deceased. one thing, shrimps after they moult, their shell will be soft and takes time to be harden hence more vulnerable to attacks.

Today, I found my wood shrimp dead with its head eaten away. Next to it was it's molted exoskeleton. Although I cannot put a finger as to whether the fishes had attacked the shrimp when it was most vulnerable when molting, but I had a strong suspicion that they did so. One thing I like to point out is that my shrimp is easily 1 1/2 time bigger than the any my other fish in the tank. Can anyone concur with me on whether my theory is accurate?

they just make the most of everything that comes along their way

Yup, think that happens. I lost quite a few large shrimps last time too while they were molting. We love soft shell crabs also, do we?Originally Posted by Jungle-mania

What fish do you keep with the shrimp? Considering the wood shrimp's size I thought it is rather surprising for it to be attacked by some small fish. But I have not kept wood shrimps before so I may be wrong.

Coral red pencils, 3 line, weitzmani's tetras, clown killies, chocolate gouramis, croacking gourami, sparkling gourami, liqourice gouramis and a whiptail. All of which are smaller than the wood shrimp.
So far have never had my wood shrimps attacked by fishes during moulting. They seem to moult at night so may be the fishes are already sleeping. Do have alot of plants and hidding places for them to rest.
