I am asking on the behalf of my friend who has problems with his Resun cl650.

"i'm using a 2028 to power my resun cl650 presently. i noticed that the output frequently drops drastically. when that happens, i will switch of the canister, then on it again. For a few hours, the flow rate will be normal, then drops again. what could be the problem? Is it normal? sometimes flow rate drops so much nothing comes out at all, and the output hose from the chiller is filled with condensation.

is it advisable to power a chiller with a seperate powerhead? in this case, will chiller be clogged with dirt? if yes, how can i clean the chiller?"

Some important details in his following posts

"canister is working fine, because its brand new. thought my old canister was faulty thus bot a new 2028 yesterday. today, the flowrate has droped too. was wondering if this is normal, if not something is wrong with the chiller. not much media in it, so can't be the media problem too.

chiller is about 5 months old. by process of elimination, i guess its the chiller thats having a prob. what i dun understand is, everytime i off and on the canister again, the flow rate will be normal, it then drops throughout the day, until maybe like 1/3 the normal rate. why can't the rate sustain?

All along connected to canister, so doubt it ever was choked. height from canister to tank top is about 1m."

Thanks for your kind patience. I don't have experience with chillers at this stage, but hope the folks here can provide some invaluable experience and answers to help this planted enthusiasts.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Just a stab in the dark. Do you happen to have a surface skimmer attached to the canister filter?
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

My guess is that there is an air leak somewhere in the hose before the canister. Since you pointed out that at every restart, the canister filter will resume as normal until an hour or more then it stopped flowing. To me it doesn't appear to be the chiller as you or your friend noticed that there is condensation on the output hose from the chiller. The chiller is not block or minimally coated with slime in the internal cooling pipe area. Not enough to prevent the blockage but I can't be certain as I do not know if the chiller is brand new or 2nd hand.

If the media is used as stock, and no additional media is added, you could rule out the blockage caused by the media. In my personal experience, it took my 2222 some 2 years plus for it to be completely blocked. This 2222 was used to filter my 2x2x1.5ft shrimp tank with around 10 odd fish.

Try to check the hose connection. If the hose is connected to some connector or anything similar, try to get the hose to be connected to the connector as deep as possible. Push in the hose as far in as possible. Another tip is when you cut your hose, cut it as flat as possible, do not leave any jagged cuts on the edge of the hose. This jagged edge will let in minute volume of air into the hose where it will accumulate in the canister. Also if possible, keep the hose length as short as possible as the longer the length of the hose used, the lower the flow rate will get.

    Hope this helps.

thanks BFG, that definitely words of an experienced hand. My friend also suspect that the problem stems from air leak, and is finding the source of the leak. He has contacted Resun's service center.
    Cheers,
