im thinking of getting a dark coloured substrate (preferably black) and saw what I want in ADA amazonia as the soil part, but what about what goes on top? I haven't seen any dark coloured sand or gravel, any suggestions?

Nothing goes on top of ADA Aquasoil.

There is also Seachem Onyx sand, also meant to be used on its own.

cool, but aquasoil clouds the water like crazy when filling the tank right? and is it susceptible to digging critters?

It doesn't cloud the water like crazy when it is new... But if you use used Aquasoil, it will cloud as it breaks down after some time... Not sure about the damage done by diggers...

aquasoil doesn't really cloud that much. Just ensure that they are nicely laid on the bottom of the tank. Cover portion of it with a plastic bag, then run water over it, shouldn't cloud that much. MY 1.5 feet tank didn't cloud, i managed to get a big piece of plastic sheet to cover my substrate of aquasoil, run water over it. No problem at all

Aquasoil is fine.. it doesn't cloud water if you know what to do.
If filling a new tank with no water.. lay a plastic bag on top of your soil layout, then take another plastic bag and fill water into the second bag, letting it overflow out ..and onto your first bag.. this way.. the water is gently let into the tank and gravel is not disturbed.

When filling a tank already filled with water..
Take a large funnel and stop one side with your finger. Fill to brim. submerge 1/2 of the funnel into the water. Let go of finger. water will wet the aqasoil on the lower portion of the funnel and the weight of the dry gravel above will push the wet gravel ensuring that all will sink and not cloud water. Direct flow accordingly and repeat when necessary.

    hope that helps.

ok thanks a lot. but ther'es another thing, will the nutrients in the aquasoil leach out into the water? and when do i know whether the nutrients have run out and its time for ferts? or maybe excess fish food will do the job.

..and one thing, don't wash the soil, you use it straight from the bag aquasoil is one of the best substrates around for planted tank.

I prefer Dennerle Crystal Quartz gravel over ADA aquasoil for 2 reasons:

    - No effect on pH / KH / GH so CO2 measurements can be taken easily if needed.
    - Won't breakup into mush no matter how you handle it.

yup! i agree too. It's one of the best for planted. I do came across people who washes it, and then end up having a real cloudy tank
