Anyone has good experience with the Timer ?

I like to set timing to ON/OFF my tank light.

    1. What's the normal criteria we look into purchasing one for Aqua hobby ?
    2. I like to "ON" my tank light for a bulb first and add 2 more bulbs later after 15 min with a single Timer. Is that possible ?
    3. I found the cheapest Timer cost S$18.

I think most of the forumers got "The Ben" brand of mechanical timer. Cost around $20. I have bought a few of them already. So far so good.
If you need to control 2 sets lights on/off at different timings, have to use 2 timers.
So far, I got one "Diel" brand(?) digital timer which I don't like because it can only set 2 on/off periods per day. But good thing with digital timers is that it has its own battery to keep the time. So no need to reset after a power failure.

Maybe mine is the "Weekly" version? It limits me to 2 on/off per day only.

When you buy the timer, the instructions should be all there. Cheers!

    juggler,
yes, you've got the 'weekly' version.
    for the diehl(spelling?) digital timer,
there are 2 versions, daily and weekly.
get the weekly one only if you want to
do an auto once a week black out to
    remove algae.

'TheBen' Timer can be bought at Kelantan Lane for 14 bucks. There is this digital timer which is quite good produced by Soundtech; White casing with several blue rubber buttons. Lots of functions, but got no backlight, so cannot see the display in the dark.

    corydorus,
i started off with 2 diehl mechanical timers
and later got 2 diehl digital timers.
the mechanical ones will give out a soft ticking
sound which can be quite irritating in a quiet room.
being mechanical, doubt they'll last as long too.
i prefer the digital ones anytime.
got all my timers from Sim Lim Tower 3rd floor.

Talk about IT age. Originally I was thinking of a way to use my Computer to manage the timing w/ the power socket. Have not yet think about how to do it.
Most likely need to have D/A circuits-Power.
The timing can be smart enough to manage multiple tanks, Filter, Aeration & lighting systems of limitless config.

As now I will go for the cheapest Mechanical Timer I can find (S$1 since I am doing ON/OFF twice for the entire day on the light only. So not much faint ticking and wear environments to consider.

Maybe next HDB will have IDA recommendations included - Wireless. ]

    Dennis,
TheBen timers is good enuf for keeping timing. Once you see the timer you'll know how to use it. No instructions needed.

    Simon,
Your digital timer is no doubt good, but troublesome when you need to manually on the timer. Correst me if I'm wrong.
    Cheers!!

    sherwin,
the DIEHL digital timer has a button to change
the setting to 'ON', 'OFF', 'TIMER' or 'RANDOM'.
no problem when doing a manual override.

sherwin, easy to use... I really like the digital compared to the analog.. firstly, the analog gives out a ticking out. secondly, the analog break down easier... when I started I use the analog and had to replace a few becoz the dial stopped moving.. but after changing to the digital, no prob since... easy to operate.. for those who r thinking of getting a timer, get the digital one, its worth the extra $$ and remember get the daily version, if u intend to do daily 'Sesta/blackout' like I do
