    Hi all

Need abit help with the above...

My German Rams just laid eggs (spawned?)

    I need to know

    1. When the eggs become fries?
    2. Do I need to take the eggs out now? If so, also the parents?
    3. Do I wait until the fries come out and I take the fries out?

In my 2 feet tank that keeps the german rams, I have 6 other much smaller rams, 1 platy, 1 dwarf chocolate gourami.

    Please help

    hi wasabi8888
first the eggs hatch in 3-4 days, if you have a container that you can float the eggs in take the eggs out now, but put a stream of bubbles near the eggs.
the fry should be free-swimming on day7 from when they were laid.
    hope this helps

    Thanks Mick

However, there are discussions where it is said not to separate the eggs from the parents. This is because this will cause parents to lose confidence and thus eat the eggs in subsequent spawning...

    What do you think?

May be the following options ?
    (1) get a seperation panel insert to the tank to keep the parents and eggs at one side and all the other fishes the other side.
    (2) Let nature take its cause, (means forgo this round) and remove the pair out to prepare the next round in a dedicated tank. They spawn quite frequently anyway.
    (3) Get all the other fishes out (can do it in the middle of the night with a small torchlight) since your tank is small
    may be manageable.

I will see how it is... probably will fish out the fries when they are free swimming...

BBS and commercial liquid fry.. which is better?

In a 2ft tank with so many other inhabitants, it will take a miracle for the fries to reach free swiming - 'hopping' on the gravel for that first 2-3 days doesn't count as free swimming.

If you really want to continue with this round, take out all other fishes (As dc88 suggested).

Most 1-week old rams are not big enough to take BBS. For the first 2 weeks, go with vinegar eels, green water, or liquid fry. Switch to BBS once a good number reaches 8-10mm.

Liquid fry is a commercial product (by Interpet?). Larger LFSs should have them.

For vinegar eels, try asking breeders on www.killies.com for a starting culture.

    Hi all

I have decided to keep the fries and not have them eaten up by the rest of the other rams...

I took out all the other rams except for the parents and 1 oto....

The fries are all over the place....

I am feeding them liquid fry and Hikari first bite.... each type once a day...

not sure whether that is ideal.....

The thing is I am going on leave to Japan for 1.5 weeks and the tank (which is in my office) will be taken care of by my female colleagues whom all want to be the proud grand parents....

Should I continue with the first bite and liquid fry for the entire 1.5 weeks? What other food should I buy for my colleagues to feed?
BBS is not an option as it's in the office and they would not have time nor expertise to hatch them....

    Any advice?

are the fries eatting what you had given them?

if they did than try to stay with what you are feeding with, till you got back ..

To keep things simple for your colleagues, consider live daphnia/moina from LFSs.

    1. Pour them into a pail/container.
    2. Use a fine (BBS net) to scoop out the ones in the middle/top (bottom 1s are usually dying/dead).
    3. Rinse them in a small portion of your tank water in a smaller container.
    4. Dump them into your fry tank.

Each feed should last 1-2 days for the first 1-2 weeks as the fries are still small.

Btw, at some point (usually 1+ week after fries are free swimming), the parents should also be taken out to prevent them eating the fries.

    Good luck.

are they picking on the gravel, where your food is placed?

you may also want to try frozen daphnia..

Check their tummies to see if they are eating. Their tummies should be bigger and there might be some colour (depending on food type) after they feed...

Ram fries are so small for the first few days that they rely on infusoria, green water or other tiny organisms for food.

BBS is a disputed choice for ram fries:
    - Breeders that shared their breeding programs online say its too big for most fries and only a handful will survive.
    - Folks I know use it to pick out the better (larger) fries since we don't breed fish for profit. BBS is also the most nutritious live food available for fries here.

Now that I'm a working man with a kid, live daphnia/moina makes more sense since it:
    - Survives in freshwater until eaten so I don't have to feed 2-3 times everyday.
    - If water already contains infusoria, daphnia/moina will reproduce and smaller fries and eat those.
    - You can keep them alive in a plastic tank/pail with aeration for a least week even if you know nuts about live food culture.

I also try to avoid frozen products because:
    - They are way too big for fries to handle.
    - Uneaten ones foul up the tank quickly and can wipe out a tank of fries within days.

    Hi theodore

I am a bit confused on live daphnia...

If you say it survives in the actual tank, why do you keep them in a separate pail?

Unless you mean that when you buy minimal amount of live daphnia, there is too much to be placed in the tank... and therefore need to put in separate pail...

I keep leftovers (usually 60-80% of the original bag) in a separate pail because they do die when they run out of food or if the water conditions gets bad (low oxygen, high ammonia, etc). To keep them going, add yeast or some egg yolk to the pail every other day.

On feeding: Throw in a good portion of daphnia and they will survive in your fry tank until eaten. Then what? Either go out and buy more from the LFS or net some out from that pail you set aside every day or two. Try throwing all the daphnia into your fry tank in one go and I'm sure the 2ft tank will stink to high heaven within 2 days.

    ok.. flying off tonight...

At last look yesterday.. parents and fries are ok....been feeding the fries a mixture of liquid fry and hikari first bite

Cross my fingers till i get back....

Yesterday, decided to change water.. wah, water quite stinky.. also can see traces of Hikari first bite on the glass wall... not sure whether it's over feeding....

after 20% water change, hope things will be ok.. anyway, my first time..... so if things don't turn out right... i don't feel so bad.....
