Hi everyone, I am currently using 8 packs of Seachem Onyx Sand in my 3x2x2. I'm really tempted to add in some base fert below. What do you all recommend?
Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

I think Onyx Sand is good enough on its own.

If you really want to add base fert, JBL Aquabasis Plus is a trusted choice. There's also Ferka Aquabase, Dennerle Deponit-mix.

I also read that the sand is good enough on its own, but how long can it last?

Why would you like to add a base fertilizer with Seachem Onyx sand in the first place since the sand works well on its own? As long as you dose well through the water column and do not neglect the tank much, you don't need a base fertilizer. (Looks better without one and makes uprooting much cleaner.)

What peter says is true. Moreover it'll make the substrate look unsightly (two tones of colour) when you uproot.

Currently its about an inch in front and 3 inches at the back. I can't plant any foreground plants without them floating out after awhile.

Without being disrespectful, problem does not lie with thickness of your current substrate, but rather with the planting method. I guess any foreground plant will do well in 1 inch substrate... (E.tenellus, glosso, hairgrass, APP, etc et)... Do try planting individually instead of a lump, which i only can assume you did... Again, it's only an assumption..

Or maybe you have some critters taht love to tease you by uprooting the plants..

    Have fun with the hobby.

I use tweezers to plant most of my plants... only some exceptionally plants with big rhizome or bulb i cannot plant with tweezers.
