I am refering to the recognised chinese translation for the group, actually it appears to be used for the genus Macropodus.

Macropodus is the orginal genus that includes the fighting fish (Betta) group. The type species of Betta which is B. fasciatus was originally named Macropodus fasciatus. In the chinese literature it seems the name 斗鱼 refers to Macropodus but I'm not sure what is the chinese name used for Betta.

    How about some Hokkien names?

"thor sat" = lonkang catfish with roundish head and very long whiskers (very common in my childhood days... pick up a submerged tin can and you're likely to have snared a pale-coloured 'thor sat."

    bicock hu = longkang guppies

sepat = I can't remember anymore if it referred to angelfish or pearl gouramis?

神仙鱼 is discus, normally with Qi1 Cai3 prefixed...

Angel fish is cang1 yu2, similar to the marine fish that we eat steamed...

Guppies are kong3 que4 yu2 (peacock fish) or simply 'guppy'...

I think it's a very apt name for the fish. "Thor" in Hokkien means mud ...and this fish with their muddy colour, blends in very with their longkang substrates. Also, they like to bask in mud when the're resting.

I don't know what to say about the "sat" bit though.

Sepat is not Hokkien. It's Malay for juvenile giant gourami (normally made into kiam Hee)

thor sat should be 土蚤, literally mud flea
in cantonese we call it 塘蚤.
