Just wondering as I'm starting a new planted tank.

after the initial setup, how often do you do water changes during the initial 4-6 weeks cycling period? every 3 days? n change how much?

den after cycling n things have all settled down, would a weekly or fortnightly 30% water change be sufficient?

not very sure of how much n how often i shd change water...

I normally do not do water change during this period.

It will depend on what you are keeping, what type of tank you have, filtration system, etc. Give us more details, maybe we can answer your queries better.

    ok.

    having a 1.5ft with 36w e-ballast pl, eden 501 filter, canister co2 n cooling fan

planning low bioload, maybe ard 10+ crs and 10+ small schooling fish

plants currently planning spiky n taiwan moss, mini pellia n mini riccia, narrow java and jap hairgrass. haben decided on other plants yet.

so u meant that during initial cycling of abt 1 mth no water change?

By now your tank will have cycled through already... planted tanks cycle faster than fish-only tanks, even faster if you added bacteria from another tank.

For your kind of setup, 50% weekly is a good choice.

i read that shrimps are sensitive to conditions.

am apprehensive of changing 50% at one go weekly that it mgt cause shrimp deaths

    any advice on this?

also not sure as to how often i shd clean the filter media in the eden 501?
clean as in take out and rinse in old tank water.

how about changing the media. do u guys change the filter media?
if yes then how long once?

    what substrate you using??

if you planning to keep shrimps, for the water change, on the safe side, add anti-chlorine, wait for overnight at least before using.

That's the problem with shrimps... I only keep Yamatos.

Clean the filter media at most once every 6 months. The lesser you disturb it, the better. Usually only the sponge/filter wool is changed when it clogs up or gets excessively dirty.

using normal gravel. brand is Angel i think.
with ocean free base fert underneath

hmm...... okay just have to take care with the shrimps.
no chlorine, no heavy metals, no big changes to tank.
got seachem prime shd be gd for shrimps

think i change weekly 30%, plus weekly fert routine
since with fan daily also need top ups.
    any comments with this regime?

Try to avoid fishes if you want to keep expensive shrimps like CRS.

Fishes will cause stress to shrimps and increase bioload to tank.

i think for all the plants that you've listed, is more than enough for your 1.5feet tank. Don't add anymore. And also, i agree with shihyong too, don't put any fish in your tank if you want to keep CRS

    Ok.
Hmm, was planning put about 10 or so rasboras in with the crs.

Since you all say so, maybe i'll ditch the fish or change to cherry.

the crs are too expensive to die.
even the cheap cheap one in lfs also cost around 3bucks per shrimp

maybe you can start off with cherries first. Get yourself more confident then you're ready to take the CRS plunge

Hv to be real careful with shrimps during cycling. Got bad experience before with yamato even 2mths old tank. Also, be very careful of introducing new plants into tanks with yamato. from my past experience, there is risk of mass dying even new plants were well rinsed.

As to the fortnightly water change, i don't believe in this nonsense!
I hv never changed water in my tanks, even my marine tanks. I just top up for evaporation.

    yea probably.
learn how to manage the required water parameters and the temperature.
was initially thinking buy those cheapest ungraded crs test 1st..

as for the water change, since i am using fan n need to top up water frequently to replace evaporation.

is the water change still necessary or gd to have?

hearing some pple say change 50% weekly
some others say no change just top up will do

    am kinda confused here.

Well, personally, changing 50% wkly is definitely no no for me. Firstly, it is such a hazzle that it spoil the enjoyment of the hobby. Secondly, the main reason for water change is to adjust some kind of unbalance in the tank eg too much nutrients; nitrate etc . My way of doing is to achieve equilibrium by restricting the urge to overfeed. Feed just enough for the plant to absorb and sustain the fish. Fishes can survive weeks without feeding but of course dont go to that extreme. The purpose of hving a planted tank, IMHO, is to create some kind of eco-balance simulating nature.

But just to be safe and minimise algae problem, i also put a small pack of chemi-pure in the my filtration system. You can do a google search and find out more.

this hobby is meant to be enjoyable, man. wkly 50% water change, my goodness. think the fishes also can't take this kind of shock too

i also find this regular top up a bit tedious too. with the fan blowing, almost hv to top up every day.
I thinking of installing an automative topping system

haha i'll keep to topping up water n lay off the automations for the time being
maybe in future...when i get sick of topping water
meanwhile i'll just leave a pail of water to age overnight before i sleep
so that next day nite i can use it for top up
