Shrimps like to explore or when water condition is bad they want out.
I used fine netting but whenever there a covering on the outlet they will be clogged with debris overtime.

You can try fitting it with a sponge filter.
If you use a filter or the net with holes that is too small, you have to take note that it can create 'jam' where the water cannot go into the filter smoothly for cleaning.

thanks all for the replies!!
i think i will get those sponge to fit onto the cannister inlet..

hi ,
Don't worry, i also used the sponge type, but somehow i still find
shrimplets inside my Eden 501.![]()
They seems to like living there are they are getting bigger inside.
I usually worry they don't have food so i let the inlet suck some alage wafers
to feed them.

Hmm..maybe tonight i should take a look at my eden 501 filter, no wonder i kept having missing shrimps![]()

Don't get a hang-on filter!! my old shrimps on my old tank got sucked up and became prawn paste. ('ha mai')

Erm...i have a hang-on filter now..think just cut a piece of sponge, make a hole in the middle, push the inlet tube into it and voila...sponge filter.

Hi Freshman, When I mentioned that shrimps like to explore, basically they are here, there, everywhere, looking for foods or algae. In fact I saw some cherries resting on driftwood just beneath the water surface 'eating' the protein layer.
If water condition is bad, shrimps seem to be swimming like looking for a escape route.

thanks eddyq for the explanation
time to get some sponge to cover the inlet.. (cherry population decreasing..)
i'm using a a cheap in-tank wool filter and air-pump. Works great, zero-risk to shrimplets, no chiller needed and they breed like rabbits

I have shrimps + shrimplets in my 2028s about a good 20 plus of them, I just catch them and throw them back into the tank.
Back to topic: Just use a fine net to cover up the inlet grille. Just make sure you clean that netting once in a while.

don't worry about the shrimps, they grow up fine in the filter. just pour the filter water into a net when you do cleaning, and retrieve the shrimps.

Hi all,
I used the netting that is cut up from one of my old fishnet (those green types) which I think is pretty effective as it will not clog up overtime and yet prevent shrimplets from being sucked in.
However I had also used a normal rubberband to secure the netting to the inlet.. wondering if it is shrimp-safe? As in, will it affect the parameters of the water over time?
IME, stocking or fine netting would be a better option compared to filter wool or sponge.
Filter wool and sponge tends to clog up rather quickly and have to be removed to clean at least every 2 weeks or so.
If the mulm is not removed from the wool or sponge, the flowrate is significantly reduced.
I am now using stocking and flowrate is still good after about 1 month.
