I just had a incident when I had to clear out the particular tank when I accidentally dump a huge load of fish flakes into the tank. Luckily my substrate is inert sand so pretty easy to handle. It was nice viewing the multi-coloured snowflakes decending in my tank.

IF it was Aquasoil...how to clean?? Would I stir up more particles and break up the soil when I handle it? I wonder if it is a sign from above to warn me to make careful choices regarding my substrate..

P.S. Nicky...post more please..no need shy that you take up more thread space than the threadstarter
you mentioned it was an accident. i don't see how it will affect your decision to use Aquasoil

good info for people thinking of using ada soil but worried about the "mud" it supposedly will turn into.

like i said, im no expert but i listed out the reusing part as its one of the things i been thinking about
what many beginners like me think about is cost. its not a "cheap" hobby like i said.
tho nicky had a good pt in that the time spent to wash n reuse the old gravel could probably be better spent earning more money so as to pay for new ones

yea true, i could use the ada mud to grow emersed plants. but the problem is my house has ZERO potted plants. i don;t think my mum would be too happy to see pots of plants sprouting ard the house when i decide to "recycle" used ada soil this way.

well, good n valid pts they are still.
    keep the discussion going!
you can always give away your ADA mud to plant lovers who will appreciate them.

imo, ADA is not too much expensive than lapis sand & base fertiliser. a packet (around 9kg) of ADA is S$35. a packet of 10kg lapis sand is around S$10. JBL base fertiliser will cost you easily more than S$15.00 (i haven't got a clue how much it cost). see, ADA is not that costly after all.

Just wondering for a planted tank with a healthy quantity of stem plants, we would need to cut and replant the stem plants every couple of weeks. Would this disturb the ADA soil?

To also help my understanding of ADA soil, no base fert is required? Thanks!
yes, throw the old sand away. if you must, try to re-use the top layer only.

you would not have disturb the ADA soil if you cut & replant them slowly and gently. worst case scenario is to see some dirt particles or cloudy water. but they will disappear and recover in a while if your filter is doing its job.

Is GEX same as GenX? Where are they now? I thought they close for good already. Good that they are still operating.

    Thanks riccia,

Am wondering what to do with my old sand when I decommission some of my tanks. Thought that it would be a waste to simply throw them away so I toyed with the idea of reusing them. Btw, mind sharing where you dispose your unwanted sand?

Thanks for sharing your experience of replanting using ADA soil. Am now using Lapis and base bert. Have the trim my stem plants often and also when my hands are itchy for a rescape. Will seriously consider ADA for my next project.

you can always dispose them in a garden or park. but please find a sandy patch instead of just on the grass.

    or HDB rubbish collection point.

just be a little extra gentle when you use ADA and everything should be fine.

Heya all, seems no one's asked what i wanted to ask so here goes:

Won't bottom dwellers like catfish, corys and some barbs stir up the ADA mud?

Also, ADA Powersand is the "clay ball" that people use as substrate and Aquasoil is the basefert right? or is it the other way around?

Ha! Okie Nicky. Might be tearing down my tanks in a couple of months time. Still waiting for some news on my plans for next year. Hope I don't forget!
