    Hi guys,

    Further discussion from this thread...

So what differentiates a mere planted tank from a planted aquascape? I know it's subjective, but I'm sure it's an interesting discussion.

In my opinion, I think the difference subtle and subjective.

A planted tank is something you can glance at in 2 seconds and look away. Any aquarium with plants practically qualify to be in this category. My corydoras tanks had Anubias spp. tied on wood and is quite 'green'.

A planted aquascape is something that you find visually interesting and can spend minutes exploring the intricate details for an extended period of time. It has usually at least 1 to 2 focal points or visual anchors and the plants are not arranged in a random manner, but does not appears artifically "organised" either. Then again, there are Dutch style aquascapes to bear in mind.

    Comments?

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Planted tanks- a plant collector's tank , or tanks with plently of plants for the sake of the fauna; eg. apistos or shrimp tanks

Planted Aquascape- Tanks for fussy people who always want to re-arrange something rocks, wood, plants etc

Let me try.. in the context of LFS the difference is :-

"Planted tank" is the tank you find in LFS that hold pots of water plants for sale. The owner of LFS will not bother to rearrange after you take out a pot or two.

"aquascape layout tank" is the LFS's pride and joy. Their display tanks and they certainly will not appreciate it if you try to sink you hands into their display tanks.

Their "aquascape tank" will give customers an idea what they would like to buy from the "planted tank"

IMO, aquascaping in the aquaria hobby is the careful use of proper substrate, beautiful natural driftwood, interesting rocks, and succulent green plant life, to combine all these materials and arrange them to best suit the aquatic life and natural habitat you are trying to recreate.

Whereas a planted tank is, a tank with plants 'thrown' into it (= most primitive form :P). Or just a generic way of saying that you have included plants in your setup.

Organising ya plants in an 'arranged' manner, to me in this case, is the first baby step to aquascaping ...

    Finally, 'plants for thoughts' :
A PLANTED TANK MAY NOT BE AN AQUASCAPE, BUT AN AQUASCAPE MUST BE A PLANTED TANK.

    Cheers.

    Interesting!
For me, planted tank is where you grow plants, experiecing different species, learn how to fight algae problems, learn the balance between plants and fishes. it is the basic stage for aquascaping.

so , aquascaping for me will be for those who are experience enough with plants growth, and know how to control for algae, and who go the extra step of creating something of out hardscape, flora and fauna.

An aquascaped tank might not be a planted tank and a planted tank might not be an aquascape...

Some good scapes are plantless... Like the Amazon blackwater tanks with driftwood and dead leaves...

Planted tanks without scape would be like an LFS's tank for selling plants, for an example... Or a tank where the plants are neatly placed a species a corner without any effort to balance their placings and effect on their 'neighbours'. A scape can be without the hardscape (rocks and wood, for an example), the Dutch tank is a very good example of such. The scaper would make sure the plants match each other (height, colour, leave size, leave shape, etc) and the plants are trimmed 'to scape'...

    My 2 cents...
    Read me! http://justikanz.blogspot.com/

    I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted! ), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted! ), C.tonkinensis(Melted! ), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii

Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...

Imho, a scape is a intended peice of art. A planted tank is a tank with plants for the sake of having plants.

    Agree with you.

Planted Tank = quite general definition as long as there are plants in the tank.
Aquascape = seem to be a purposely created Planted Tank. Requires more knowledge of plant growth and requirements. Plant selection and layout is planned. Even the fish are carefully selected.

To me, a planted tank is like a house where people put in a few pots of plants so as to add a little greenery.

On the other hand, an aquascape is like a garden where efforts has been made to make it into a harmonious place.

Planted tank is like a farm, with the main purpose of keeping a plant alive. That's the phase many of us went through when we started off.

Aquascape.. you begin to organise things so it becomes more pleasing to the eyes.

    Cheers,
Quite agree with you on both. If I may add on your 'aquascape' definition, not only that it's 'visually interesting' as you mention, but I would like guess that it's a 'carefully planned' set-up. It's 'soothingly arranged'.

My thought on planted tank is to grow some plants and hopefully some algae, not too much and let some cardinal tretas to hide among the plants.

Aquascape is like if possible all equipments by ADA, have tall/mid/foreground plants complete with rocks/DW. The plants must be growing healthly and trimmed maybe no algae in sight. School fishes swimming from left to right. All this just to capture in a photograph.

Planted tank - tank with plants in it....

Aquascape tank - tank with plants in it that are arranged in a asthetic way so as to be as like art.

so.. An aquascape tank encompasses a planted tank but not the other way around..

    imho....

    aquascape = water scape
so a scape with/without plants could qualify for an aquascape, right?

to take that further we could break it down to:

    a) planted aquascape
    b) hardscape only aquascape
    c) free-style aquascape (ala ruperts mars rock-scape with no water and fish)

i formed this idea after seeing this book:

    Aquarium Design - Matthew Christian
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/380...e=UTF8&s=books

i don't know how many of you have seen the inside of this book.
but he had some, i thought, cool designs without any plants.
for instance, coloured gravel with plastic sheets cuts into shape to look like a mountain scape with fish of only one type and colour to match.
i don't think my explaination does it justice though.

however, some of the planted scapers would probably puke at the gaudy colours and scape!

but i must say his scape are really colourful and eye-catching for people who don't know much about fish keeping.
hence, i believe his scapes have a place/part in attracting people to the hobby.
