have not come across one yet.
even though inverters have used in industrial applications for >15 years, their adoption for consumer products has only been a couple of years. think it will take quite some time before it trickle down to aquarium chiller.

    nope.
the inverter based chiller uses power electronics to control the motor speed by varying the frequency of the ac power. thus the motor is always running; low speed when load is low. this technique is better than traditional on/off control as it eliminate the high current required at motor start phase.

Had 2 experience that has to make decision to go inverter or otherwise and I believe they are related to this topic..

Aircon.. I was told by the sale person that inverter will cost more (obviously) and is able to maintain temp better. However it also take a longer time to achieve the required temp. But because of the technology involved (as described by Tawauboy), it consumes less power and lower the electrical bill. For places like bedroom where potentially you will leave the AC on for a good 8hrs a day, it is worth the investment. For places like dinning hall where I only turn it on when I have visitors (not often) and I want the temp to drop quickly. So the $$ saving will not be justifiable to invest in inverter, plus inverter cools the place down slower which is not what I want.

Fridge.. just purchased one.. The Jap brand Mitsubishi has one with inverter that cost >$3000. One without cost about $1500 or less. All other things assumed being equal, over 5 years (typical life span of fridge) I do not see how the difference in price can be justified by electrical bills.

So ultimately to go inverter or not will most likely be the $$ and payback issue unless inverter cost as much (or as little) as the regular ones.

    Nicky,

I don't think inverter takes a longer time to cool down to a certain temperature. The compressor is running more on a continuous mode then a discrete mode. Which mean it is better at maintianing at certain temperature and less surgues (better to your compressor).

an inverter air conditioner would be able to cool down a space at a similar rate when compared to a non-inverter air conditioner. the difference will be at the start phase. the inverter take a longer time in running the compressor up to full speed (maybe 10~20 seconds depending on the settings) while non-inverter based compressor may be running at full speed within 5 seconds or less.

for a fridge, i would think that if the fridge is frequently opened and closed then the savings would be there.
