Last Sunday, when my team arrived at a small town called Lingga at the riverbank of Batang Lupar, we're expecting to find the infamous "Ikan Terubok" (English name = Toli Shad; scientific name = Tenualosa toli; family = Clupeidae) in the market. However, this fish is not available yet in the market, except ikan tapah (Wallago leerii) & some brackish water fishes caught from Batang Lupar.

Ikan terubok is a high demand food fish in Sarawak. It used to be found abundantly in the coastal area of Sarawak. Due to the high demand, the fish population is decreasing caused by over fishing. Now, it became one of the most expensive food fishes.

During the dry season of every year, this species of Shad will migrate from the coastal water to the upper part of Batang Lupar to breed. According to the locals, this year is a bit unusual. The fishermen only managed to catch a small amount of Ikan Terubok.

The reduction of fish population may be caused by:

    (1) Over fishing.

    (2) Water is getting polluted.

    (3) The change of the climate. This year is probably the wettest dry season in southern Sarawak.(effect from the global warming???) This unusual climate change has influenced the fish behavior to migrate & breed ???

Whatever it is, Humans have done too much for destruction of mother earth & causing a lot of flora & fauna to face the threat of extinction.

On the trip to explore southern part of Batang Lupar, a species of tiny algae eating shrimp (Caridina sp.) was found in a almost blackwater stream. And, juvenile of pearl gourami (most probably) found abundantly in a blackwater canal. This is my first time to catch the wild pearl gourami.

A "floating" jetty at Batang Klauh. The jetty was destroyed by the strong water current.

The mighty Batang Lupar. This river is famous of man-eating crocodile. It is one of the widest rivers in Borneo island.

The big mouth of Ikan Tapah (local name; scientific name = Wallago leerii). This is a species of giant catfish from Borneo.

At first, I thought its a slug, but after taking a closer look, it is a caterpillar!

A river. Take note the hair grasses growing on the mud bank at the center of this river.

Bright orange - whitish colored tiny algae eating shrimp. (Caridina sp.) Male is only 1.5cm!!!
