Well I have a question. Are Marine Tanks made better?
I have gone to a few Fishshops in Taiwan to inquire about having a tank made for me. 90 X 40 X 40 cm. With 10mm glass and braceless. along with the stand (sort of an ADA style)
Well the price the Marine shops give me, for a Freshwater tank built is around 3/4 more to double what the LFS will quote. The Marine shop tank looks beautiful and the stand is exactly what I was looking for in color any style but when I give a picture to the other LFS they all say they can build it and quote me a lower price.
For a Marine Tank, is the glass the same? Is the silicon the same? What would I be looking for to explain the price difference? Is is just a stand tank size and design, with nothing fun. The stand appears to be built the same internally.
Notice something strange though, one marine shop said for that tank, 90X 45 X45, they need to add a glass rod about 3 mm in diameter to the seams (corners of the tank) going vertically in the silicon. It qill add to stability, the other marine shop and all the other LFS say there is no reason with a 10mm tank.
Can you help me out here?

Hmm, can't help you there TCampbell. I've only had my 1st custom tank a few years ago but it is a 2x2x1.5ft tank (LxBxH). Currently housing my mom's shrimp cum planted tank. Previously had a ready made 3ft tank sold by the lfs but it leaked after 2+ years. My 1st custom marine tank will only be delivered next week I hope. It's gonna be a 4x2x2ft tank done by a tankmaker who does marine setup. I'll pass this question to him if I do not forget.

that glass rod is will help to stabilised the tank as we are talking about at least 20kg of Live rocks (not including water and sand). in simple words, that shop that you went to, know what he is doing.
another thing, don't get stainless stell or any metal stands. they will rust like there is no tomorrow.

Salt water has a heavier density that fresh water due to the salt content. Hence, large size marine tanks need to be carefully engineered to take the additional water pressure.
For tanks with dimensions like 90X 40 X 40, it is usually not so much of a concern, whether you use it for marine or freshwater. This is because the tank is not really that tall. And if you have 10 mm glass, then you can definitely keep it braceless, like ADA. Just ensure that they are using quality silicon and it's cured properly before you actually test for water leaks and use it.
