I guess they're the same, just different names. Water pump for weak flowrates and powerheads for those big ones that pump water like mad.
Hi,
Need to know what is the difference between these two. Are they the same thing?
I have a top filter box but with a spolit motor. I am thinking I need to buy something submersible to bring the water to the top filter box.
Also, I saw some models have 2 outlets at the LFS. What is the use of 2 when actually I think most people only need 1 to bring the water up to the filter box?
I also saw an ATMAN Liquid Filter, which looks like a pump. Is it a normal pump or is it a filter?
Thanks.

From my understanding, powerheads are used to help improve circulation.
And pumps, as the name explains itself.
Those with 2 outlets serve as both a pump and a powerhead.

I would express my opinion too if you do not mind.
The pump is meant also to lift the water to a certain height (this should be stated on the package on a diagram showing how the water flow decreases with the height) and can eventually work submerged or outside of the tank (I am actually using one for my water changes for pumping the ro/tap water from the storage bin to my tank and it sits outside of the bin/tank connected through clear tubing). It has inlet and outlet couplings/nuts for hose/tubing connections.
The powerhead on the other hand is not meant to lift the water (although some of them can but with a very poor flow rate) but only for improving circulation in the tank or for running with a co2 reactor/powerfilter/UGF etc.
