with much inspiration and guidance from this wonderful site, yesterday (sunday) was a busy day for me as i've set up a new 2.5' planted tank. here's some pictures for you guys to see and comment. enjoy. using diy CO2 for the 2.5'.

yeah the wood definately is unique. like the shape of a tree trunk. however the 1.5' is very messy right now cos i plan to make it into a shrimp only tanks.
do u guys think my 2.5' would look better with black background?

one question, how long should i wait before i add some fishes into my 2.5'? i've read somewhere that i should wait until the plants are established first then only add the fish which could take 1 month or more. or should i add a small number after 3-4 days to cycle the tank?

nah, not crs yet. will start with cherries first which by the way has already hatch their eggs and now there's tons of babies cherrys. they're kept in my small plastic tank.
yeah black background is better than now. should have done that 1st. now quite difficult to do.
i've notice some 'cotton-wool' substance in my 2.5' tank recently. is it algae and how to get rid of it?
there's also some white spots on the glass. could it be bacteria?
Yes, it is algae, but it will go away on its own. new tank setups will normally get it. You can remove it manually by hand, or just simply wait for it to disappear.
gee thanks. was wondering what algae is it. anyway seems to be getting less today. however now instead of only spots on the glass (slightly less) there seems to be hair algae as well. hopefully my flying fox will get rid of it.
i've added the black background already and definately better contrast to view the plants.
spawnster, i would advise using cylinder co2 for your 2.5feet tank, diy is really too risky, guess that's why you are experiencing algae problem
yup already got my co2 cylinder + solenoid regulator for a few days already. no signs of algae for now. plants are flourishing and pearling.
now i got problems with snails snails snails and more snails. these guys really can multiply. and some of them are eating my plants!man, i really need to find a puffer fish but there seems to be a shortage of them in my country. any other way to get rid of them?

actually i've found out that the snails are harmless. the ones that are eating my plants are caterpillars. have anyone of you encountered them before?these guys have ferocious appetites and some of my plants are nearly gone or have leaves with holes. they would wrap themselves in leaves to disguise themselves from the fishes. caught a few of them already.
so far i've never heard any 'underwater' caterpillars. hope someone can help.

By the way, the snails are not harmful to your plants, you can probably leave them alone unless you only see snails covering every cm of your tank

These fly can decimate your soft-leaved plants like blyxas in less than a week.
You may notice some big black fly/flies flying around the house if you fail to rid the caterpillars!

can try get more hairgrass and plant it at interval of centimeters. hmm....the lotus would suggest to relocate!?

yeah agree with u on the hairgrass. i've also lump too many strands together. but i oso got glosso there.
i've put the lotus there to hopefully block the 'balls' from view. where should i position it?
Looking great! Perhaps you can move the Tiger lotus just off-centre to the left? You can try hiding the CO2 reactor behind the foliage of the Hygrophilia Difformis.
Looks like there's some green spot algae on your crypts (Parva?). Might be good to increase your PO4 levels. Btw, what's that plant on your left foreground?

That plant in 3613 is not aquatic. Forget about that one. It's common by drainside.

yeah i don't think it's aquatic too cos i got it beside a stream. but it seems to be doing well fully submerged.
i've remove the 'ball' cos sometimes it's spining sometimes not. got a glass diffuser instead.
and 2 of my cardinals died btwn the space of a few days. don't know why. i've never done any water test before so i'm not so sure what could be the problem. could it be i've added in too many fishes at once?
