I am using a overhanging filter for my CRS tank. No surface skimmer. Problem is that the planted tank has a layer of protein on the surface. Is it alright for CRS? Very unsightly

CRS or whatever shrimps issues are usually with DO (Dissolved Oxygen levels) and not some protein layer issue. Have some moderate surface movement would prevent the DO level from getting low with good or poor plant production.

Thought by using an overhang filter, the outflow will agitate the surface and thus there will not be a layer of protein.

However, it doesn't affect the crs I think. Have been breeding crs for nearly 1.5 years with a layer of protein on the surface and with zero casualty, and lots of generations.

i thought so too leeruisheng bro. But was proven wrong by my hang on filter. In the end, to solve the problem, I've went to get a HOF with surface skimmer to get rid of the oil film problem

You can place tissue paper over the surface to absorb or some fishes like molly will eat the layer film.

molly, pathy or guppy will eat the film but it will eat the shrimps fry as well, as a snack

oh ya forgot that it's a crs tank. so the best way to remove film is using the tissue paper method.

If its a small tank(about 1ft ) will installing a small fan disrupt the water surface and break up the film? My tank constantly has it, though luckily the CRS have been fine
