Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.
Freshwater does not have the density to support the formation of the tiny bubbles to surround the protein for skimming... A surface skimmer would be good enough to remove excess protein...

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
Tried that once before; can work to a certain extent, but got several problems.
1) Wood air bubble block "melted" away; so must use other methods to generate the fine bubbles (the black rubber diffuser line is a fairly decent substitue).
2) The level of the skimmer needs to be adjusted so that the collection tray does not get over flooded.
3) Small fishes tend to get trapped in the skimmer.
4) Conclusion : Too troublesome.
