    Hi to all,

I have some observations regarding my shrimp tank. Before I go further, here are some information of the tank. I don't have test kits to test the water parameters.

    Tank size: 2 x 1.5 x 1.5
Gravel: Red JBJ gravel on top of coral chips
Filtration: Undergravel filter using air stone
Temperature: 26 to 28 degrees celsius with fan on 24/7.
Shrimp type: about 15 cherries, 3 crs, 3 malayan
Others: Moss on DW, Fissiden on DW, small clump of windelov and 2 mesh of mini pelia

The above set up has been running for more than 1 month. Aged water with Seachem Prime is always used during water top-up/change.

    Below are my observations:

    1. On most occasion, after a water top up or partial water change. The shrimps will be 'running' around the tank. Is this kind of behaviour normal?

    2. Flat worms seems impossible to totally eradicate them. I've tried reduced feeding but not much impact. So I have to resort to manually removing them whenever possible. I hope they aren't harmful to the shrimps. How do you prevent/eradicate these worms?

    3. The Cherries are thriving in the sense that there have been producing shrimplets, so I guess that tank condition must be quite alright. However, I still get the occasional death. Anyone shared the same experience before?

    4. I suspect that the current filtration system isn't efficient enough. Seriously thinking of getting a 2234 cannister to complement the current one. Is it an overkill for my current tank size?

Please share your thoughts and experience so that I can further improve on the tank setup for the shrimps. Thank you very much.

    Cheers,
    C.H.

1 - changed too much water or topped up too much. Shrimps haven't adapted.

2 - add in some fish to get rid of them. Don't worry, they're not dangerous.

3 - Shrimps are fine, death maybe caused by age

If you add fish to your tank you most likely will lose some of the baby shrimp Best wishes on your new filter.

    2. share with us your feeding regime. the worm problem are highly caused by your overfeeding initially. I would advise you got to overcome it by manual removal. I did have a friend who had to tear down and revamp his 3 feet tank because it was infested with worms. His problem was also he fed too much to his CRS

    4. your filtration does seems not strong enough. Would be more advisable to change to a canister type of filters. Don't get yourself too concern over over-filtration

Do you use anti-cholrine or dose with the correct dosage?

Thanks to ahkarboy and kemp for your replies!

The feeding regime is once every day, mostly in the evening. I used to feed them twice daily but have since reduced to once daily in the hope to get rid of the flat worms.

Hi Silane. I dose 3/4 capful of Seachem Prime into a common red pail of water and let the water age over night before use. There is also a small filter inside the pail for some circulation. To be frank, I am not 100% sure if the dosage amount is correct, you can say is based on 'agar-ation' and gut feel.

Do you have simple and good solution to it?

    Cheers,
    C.H.

Any chemicals used to kill planarias/snails will harm the shrimps you are keeping in the tank. They are all invertabretes and are all similarly affected by the same chemicals...
